I have undone some of the damage from the weekend, my net loss so far is 4.6 lbs. I’m happy.
3 lbs down since last Tuesday.
I got my pedometer from this web site but through a program sponsered by the company I work for. The pedometer was free, I pay 5/month to be part of the program and I earn "miles" which translate to dollars for exercising and other things. The earned is tallied at the end of each month and I can redeem it for a number of different gift cards. I’m kind of saving up since one of the gift cards is American Airlines. I figure if I’m really diligent I may be able to walk my way to a plane ticket to see my sister in CA.
I’m not sure how it works outside of corporate sponsership but the web site should give you details.
My pedometer measures steps, miles, kcals and time. It also plugs into the USB port (with a std. USB cable) of my PC so I can upload steps which is how they keep track of miles earned. You can reset it to zero during the day for different reasons but when you upload it still remembers everything since the last upload. I’m finding that just trying to reach a certain number on the ped is incentive for me.
I was just in K-mart and saw many different pedometers for sale from about $15 up. There’s quite a variety of them out there. Good luck with your search.
**Ginger OtN ** -3 already! But we started at the same number now I’m just going to have to catch up. I’m probably older than you…yeah…that’s it…I’m older and it’s just harder for me …
:ahem:
Well done on your 3 lbs!
I’m still 187.2 lbs. I worked out this morning on the weight machines, with a 10-minute bike warm-up and stretches at the end. I wish the number would move, but I’m trying to be positive. It feels good to get back into strength training after 5 or so years away. I’m concentrating on exercise mostly at the moment, although I am trying to stick to my nutritionist’s plan, for the most part.
Thanks. I’m nearly 36 and I had been two pounds lower than that a few days earlier, so I’m sure at least one of those pounds was water weight. So, yeah.
I feel like hammered crap today, so probably no workout.
I’m sorry you’re feeling poorly Ginger hope you’re better soon.
Yes, turns out I am 10 years older than you. Not that that’s any excuse, mind you, just sayin is all.
Daughter and I took the long walk (but not the extended long walk) this morning and we jogged part of the way. She more than me. My feet don’t hurt while I’m walking but I feel it later. That and my left hip aches. It’s hell getting old.
I’m attributing all of that to the 40 extra pounds I have hanging on my frame while I work out. I’m hoping that it’ll get easier as I lose weight.
BTW - I do have a personal experiment going on in that I’m not drinking for a week to see if it affects my weight loss. So, I’m walking more than before and not drinking (so fewer calories) but otherwise not really changing my eating habits except that I’m trying not to overeat. I’ll keep you posted on how it works for me. Usually I’d have 1-2 glasses of wine/day and more on the weekends. I realize that is too much so I’m just taking a break to see what happens.
So far not drinking has all but cured my husband’s insomnia.
Thanks, YR–I’ll give that a try.
Way to go Ginger! There can’t be too much left to lose before you hit your goal weight.
My goal right now is 165. If I’m not happy with my appearance then, I’ll go down to 158, which is the Weight Watchers goal weight for someone my height.
And thanks again! After I posted that, I remembered that I actually have an elliptical trainer, a Gazelle Freestyle which I picked up at a church sale last year & never put together. (I’ve been thinking about trying to get back into shape for several years and about eighty pounds …) I set it up & tried it out, and was able to spend a solid fifteen (slow & easy) minutes on it without feeling like I need to go get an ice pack. This is really going to help me, I think! The level of workout it seemed I was getting would almost certainly be inadequate for someone in any kind of condition–this is really a bottom-of-the-barrel model, I can tell–but it’ll get me started. (And IIRC, I only paid, like, twenty bucks for it, so I can’t complain.)
Lugging it in from the garage was a more painful workout, but there you to.
You’re welcome, SC. Go You!
Don’t worry about burning megacalories now, just get accustomed to the regiment and build up the calorie burning slowly. Also, stop if your knees start hurting; don’t force it. Good Luck!
Speakin’ of burning mega calories… I’ve just made arrangements with the owner of ‘my’ yoga studio to do 5 classes a week at a drastically reduced rate. 5 classes per week @ ~1200 calories per class = I’d better lose some frickin’ weight, sucka!
Far cry from twice a week, and two or three cardio workouts at the Y.
Last night I did 325 on the elliptical machine (24 minutes) and a whoppin’ 75 calories (7 minutes, gym was closing) on the treadmill. I’ve become quite a runner lately. I will run 5 or 6 minutes, walk a minute, run 6 or 7 more until I’ve done a mile. I’m up to 5.8 mph and let me tell you, that’s a huge leap from where I was.
net loss to date (from 1/1/07) 5.8 lbs - last weekend’s damaged erased
208 - down four pounds. Haven’t had a blizzard lately (almost a full week!), so I’ve not had my normal snow shovel workout, the soccer field is snowed over - No exercise since Sunday.
This morning’s weigh-in: 254.8#…down 5.2# from January 1st.
Did 1116 calories in 55 minutes (20.29cal/min) on the elliptical last night, 1000 calories in 48:37 (20.57cal/min), my personal bests. That’s 50 minutes workout forward strides, with 5 minutes cool down doing backward strides.
Thanks velvetjones!
Since others are giving their updates, I’m down 7 so far this month. I hit 163 this morning.
Worked out for the last time this week and the gym is closed Monday. Weigh in today was 174.4 so thats -10.5 from the start.
Question about the ellipticals - mine said I am burning mega calories, and the numbers certainly don’t add up to what you guys are putting out there. Am I living in a world of delusion that 30 mins. on the elliptical can burn upwards of 1500 calories? That’s what my machine said.
I would venture to say that there’s no way in hell you are burning 1500 calories in 30 minutes on an elliptical. The machines at my gym are brand new and relatively accurate as far as that thing goes and I burn at most 450 calories in 35 minutes (and that’s doing intervals between levels 12 and 14 at a 130-140 stride per minute pace, so pretty fast and strong. Granted, I weigh about 140, but I don’t think you’re burning 3 times that much at 35 pounds heavier. I usually estimate down from what the elliptical says, because they’re calibrated for an “ideal” that most people aren’t, and estimate that I usually burn between 350 and 400 in 35 minutes.
Even Yeticus Rex’s numbers seem a little high to me, but he weighs 100 pounds more than I do so he’s going to be burning far more calories for any given exercise than I am; that’s just the way those sorts of things work.
If you’re doing steady exercise at an RPE (rate of perceived exertion) of 4-7 (1 being super duper easy and 10 being balls out can’t go any faster), you’re probably burning somewhere between 10 and 15 calories per minute. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less, but I highly doubt you’re burning 50 calories per minute, as the “1500 in 30 minutes” machine reading says.
My elliptical workouts are usually at around level 5 and I burn around 10-15 calories per minute (I’m 176 lbs).
