2007 Weight Loss Club, April

As always, in an effort to keep this thread from growing to large, here is the April edition of the weight loss club.

Good luck losing!

I took a three-pound crap this morning, but ate a 4 pound steak tonight. Don’t really know where I am right now, especially with all the beer and wine I been drinkin’!

Eh! I’m alright. I feel good.

Heh. I hope I sound that good posting on Vicodin on Monday…

My April 1 weight is 175. Hooray for being a girl.

Had one of those ‘wow’ moments yesterday. My wife and I are helping a friend work on preparing his house for sale, and we were going to be spreading some fresh topsoil along the side. As a big, strong man, :dubious: I had responsibility to lug the forty-pound bags of topsoil from the patio to the area where they were needed. After hoisting the third bag up to my shoulders and walking halfway around the house, I stopped and walked back, still carrying the heavy bag. And I said to my wife, “You know what I just realized? This bag almost exactly matches the amount of weight I’ve lost this year. A few months ago, I was lugging this bag around 24-7, every day.”

No wonder I was always so damn tired.

That’s pretty astounding, isn’t it? I picked up a 20-pound bag one day and realized I used to have three of those strapped to me. Craziness.

Last night, I saw a co-worker I haven’t seen since I was pregnant with Jimmy (we work totally opposite hours, aside from our respective leaves). When I mentioned that I wanted to lose another 10 pounds or so, she freaked out and told me that I’m skinny enough as it is. Perception, I suppose. I treated her to the sight of my belly skin.

I would like to join in this post, if it’s still okay for newcomers to. I could definitely use the support and motivation.

My highest weight was 167 last September. I’ve been dieting here and there, trying to be concious of what I eat, and getting more exercise. My lowest was 135 but I’m back up to 150. :frowning: My goal weight is to be at 120. At this point, I would just like to lose as much as possible before I return home in the middle of July (hopefully be at the most 130).

Anyways, enough babbling about me. I wish everyone lots of luck!

So far I’ve lost 20kg, and hoping to lose another 20 before October.

(All up, to get to a healthy weight, I’m supposed to lose another 40kg, but I’m willing to let that extra 20 take a while.)

Down to a little under 115kg now.

LOL. I am so looking forward to that! .

It’s been a pretty good weekend here. Diet and exercise are on track.

Everyone is welcome. Good luck losing!

173 this morning, which is freakin’ awesome and my lowest weight since high school.

I think anyone is welcome as long as they are here to contribute and/or seek help or support. The only people I would ask to leave the thread (and honestly, it’s not my thread, so I have no authority) are jerks who would come in here to mock us. Most Dopers are good people, so I don’t think there’s much danger of that.

Welcome!

Book of the month. I just started reading it, but I took a class last year that was based on it. I like it because a) it allows for intensely delicious food without deprivation, b) it’s the only diet plan (and it’s not a diet, but an education) that I’ve seen that’s based on evidence rather than WAGs, fads, or pure superstition. c) It recognizes that food is not a moral issue. There are no bad fat people, and there are no bad foods. That being said, right in the first chapter it says that while there are no bad foods, trans fats and white potatoes have been hanging with the wrong crowd.

My shoulders, belly, and certain parts of my butt are in extreme pain. Leslie Sansone has all but disappeared from cable, so I was forced to try some different exercise videos. There’s on called Start It Up!, which claims to be an introductory thing for rank beginners. My sore aching ass it is! I did the routine Friday and yesterday, and there were parts where I was screaming for sweet mercy. I’ve heard of one particular exercise I did, with minor modifications, used as a means to extract confessions from prisoners in China and Abu Ghraib. Three more! Two more! One more! Confess!

Despite the soreness, I can feel that underneath the kegger, a six pack is emerging!

Newbie here.
After making the (SHOCKING!) realization that I’m WAY overweight, 46 years old and have two children (ages six and two) that I want to see grow into fine adults; I decided that I needed to drop a pound or two.

That said, for the past seventeen days, I’ve been following the Atkins diet induction phase.

And I’m down seventeen pounds!

I know… that kind of loss can’t be maintained for much longer.

But I’m certainly encouraged!

Congrats, GrizzRich! Congrats, Ginger!

I let out another YAHOOOO! this morning at my weigh-in. I was down TWO pounds this week, for a total of 7.5. I know. Some of you lose 7.5 pounds in one week instead of eight… but… you know, I’m so THRILLED I’m moving in the right direction. I was worried about this week–I’d had more substantial lunches than I usually do on weeks when I have good losses (chili instead of salads), and had a chocolate ice cream cone, and was ambushed by some halva (did you know 100 grams has 560 calories and 28 grams of fat? Neither did I.) And yet. I lost. Soooooo happy. Core is Magic. Magic is Core.

Welcome to our newest members and great job everyone! You wouldn’t believe the amount of inspiration I get from hearing about everyone’s progress, and for that I’m truly grateful.

We looked at bicycles again on Saturday. I’m planning to get this one. We were looking at something else for me until I began to whine, “I want the pink one!” and, of course, I got my way.

I do have one question. Does anyone have any experience with those stands you can put your bike on so you can ride it indoors? Do you like it? It seems like a nice alternative to buying an exercise bike, which I’d love but can’t afford. I figure if I’m spending $260 on a bike I might as well throw another $150 in and get the stand too so I can continue to use the bike year. I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences with them first, though, before making the investment. Thanks!

No experience here, but I’d think that the main problem would be that there’d be no resistance. Do those stands have some sort of friction thingy?

Um, I don’t know actually. I only inquired at the bike shop if they had them and they do. I will look into it though.

Missed the edit window, but I did find some on Amazon and they do provide resistance, usually magnetic from the looks of it.

Welcome to the club and congrats! That’s awesome!

That seems like a bit much to lose, though. 17 pounds in 17 days is not something that most reputable health professionals would recommend. I once had a friend that landed himself in the hospital because he lost 30 pounds in 30 days, as the company guaranteed. Kidney stones, IIRC. One danger is losing muscle and bone mass, both of which can be long term saboteurs to weight loss and general health. RHPs say that .5 to 20 pounds per week is optimal and is most likely to result in long term success. Easy go, easy come, you could say. Are you doing some weight training?

I say this as a fat non-doctor, of course.

I have a co-worker that has such a trainer and per his experience, you will go through tires quickly. YMMV.
