2007 Weight Loss Club, May

Ice cream used to be my great weakness. I could go through a half-gallon (though they’re a few ounces less than that these days) in three sittings. At one point, long ago, when I only had one of those tiny, tiny fridges that didn’t actually keep ice cream frozen, I would polish off almost all of a container as soon as I got it home from the store!

Nowadays, I haven’t had the urge to buy ice cream at the store. I had a container in my freezer that I bought last November or December that I finally threw out, figuring it was probably freezer-burned by then. I do sometimes treat myself to ice cream when I’m out but I find that a small sundae or cone is just the right size for me. Sometimes, I don’t even want that much!
In other news, I had a really good walk today. I’m relieved because twice this week, I just couldn’t get in the mood to walk and just dragged my way through them. What was weird was that I actually started to feel heavy. It felt very much like the way I felt when I finally decided I had to do something about my weight. I can’t figure that out because I’m still on a great losing streak and am over 60 pounds lighter than I was back then. Why would I suddenly feel heavy again? Maybe I wasn’t getting some vitamin or mineral for those few days. (I do tend to forget to take my multi-vitamins more often than not.) Anyway, my walk today gave me the confidence that it was a temporary thing and I’m looking forward to walking again tomorrow.

**tdn, ** I agree with velvet that we need some proof of your buffness.

Of course no one “has to” keep that stuff around. But your kids might not be on your particular wieght loss plan, and certainly your spouse isn’t. (Probably.) In particular I’m thinking of two cases: My ex, who always kept a jar of cookies and a pint of ice cream on hand, and I could never really refuse the temptation. And a woman in my weight loss class, a stressed single mom of a teenaged boy, the likes of which could eat a deep-fried cow and stay skinny. All I’m saying is that when you live alone, the chances of your having unhealthy foods around is far more under your control.

Hot pics of me coming soon, if I can take some that won’t make you retch.

I get around the “junk food in the house for other people” issue in two ways. First, I’ve been doing all my shopping at Whole Foods. There is plenty of “junk food” there (cookies, ice cream, etc.), but I find that since it’s not my familiar brands and my typical fallbacks, I’m not tempted to buy them. Second, when I get stuff for my kids and husband to snack on, I get stuff that I’m just not tempted by. I am such and ice cream person, but I like the premium Ben & Jerry’s type stuff…preferably something chocolatey & gooey (or coffee!). So, I get my husband plain vanilla ice cream (yuck!) and my son popsicles (blech!). Those things just don’t tempt me at all. Luckily, they just have different tastes than I do.

Edited to add: this works because I do all the shopping…I don’t think my husband has set foot in a grocery store in the past decade.

Agreed there - I didn’t mean to imply that everyone needs to be on a diet or whatever, just that you can keep healthier stuff around in general.

I’m with the “I can’t have it around” crowd. If I have snack stuff in the house, I’m gonna eat it. So I have popcorn and plain corn chips with salsa as my two main snacks. I like the hot salsa but there’s only so much I can eat…plus I drink more water which makes me want to eat less.

I’m up to 3 miles on my run/walk with 2.5 miles running. So that’s going well…I just need to get to running the whole 3 miles then increasing my speed. I haven’t gotten any weight training in, but that’s more because I want to get one routine down before I add in anything else.

I think my husband would weigh less if he’d let me do all of the shopping. I don’t buy junk to keep around the house, but he’ll get it on his own.

Today I weigh 170, again, for the third day in a row. Guess this is my new number.

The snacking issue, for me, comes down to one basic question: do I eat when I’m hungry or because something tastes good?

I’m firmly in the latter category when it comes to snacking. If it’s around and it’s something I like I’ll eat it even when I’m not particularly hungry just because it’s there and I can.

I know people who keep junk food around…and it lasts them a long, long time…because they don’t eat it often and when they do they only eat until their appetite is satisfied.

My brain is missing the satiety cue when it comes to appetite and instead goes by the taste cue and I find that my mouth always wants more of something even if my stomach doesn’t.

Some people can snack reasonably, I can’t. My solution to that problem is to not purchase food that fit into the category of stuff I can’t stop eating. For me that’s any kind of chip, nuts, popcorn. I like the salty snacks.

Alrighty then, but remember you asked for it. You have no one but yourself to blame for it.

Possibly NSFW. Very definitely TMI. My shorts are wet because this was just after working out, so I’m sweaty. Not sure why my face is so red, but I have been out in the sun a lot.

Prepare to be unimpressed.

Moi.

I say you get extra points in that pic for being sweaty from working out!!

I’m sure I don’t look my sexiest after working out and before eating, but that’s when I feel my sexiest. The timing of the picture was intentional.

Hey, attitude is everything! When you feel sexy after working out, that reinforces good eating habits.

Of course, if y’all want to really jump start your weight loss, I could post some pics that show all the skin I’ve got that looks like melted candle wax! That’ll do your appetite in, for sure!

My husband and I both find it rather ironic that the better I look with clothes on, the worse I look with them off.

Oh my god, join the club.

OK, I’m back to exercising daily and up to 20 minutes a day. I keep telling myself I will get up early and do it so that it is done for the day and so that I will have more energy. I lie.

I’m just not that type of guy. I can motivate myself to do it at night, but not before work.

But at least I do it.

I like the attitude in your picture tdn, you look very determined.

I’m down to 167.8 this week! Yay!

I need help toning some problem areas though. What are the best exercises/weight regimens for toning and losing fat from upper arms? I have serious upper arm flab, and it makes me look much bigger than I am. Honestly, I’m happy with my waist and hips and everything else, but these arms won’t slim down!!

How can I get rid of this jiggly flab?

How much weight have you lost? Honestly, as much as you may not want to hear this, flabby skin cannot always be addressed by exercise alone. If you’ve lost a significant amount of weight, if you are, say, 40 or over, if you’ve been overweight a long time, the excess skin may require plastic surgery (the surgery that addresses the “bat wings” is called brachioplasty). Now, you should be aware that the skin does shrink some after weight loss, but may take up to a year to shrink as much as it’s going to.

Good luck!

Or you could just go all-out bodybuilding and expand the muscles to take up the jiggly space.

We’re still in the Weight-loss Wasteland here…my car decided to do itself an injury this week and we couldn’t get to the meeting yesterday. Three weeks in a row! I’m starting to feel exiled…

Well I’m only 24 and I’ve lost 22 lbs, so it’s not skin. It’s just stubborn upper arm fat. I’ve added shoulder and upper arm weight routines into my workout, but I wanted to know if anyone has any advice battling this kind of arm fat. It’s very tenacious.

You can’t spot-reduce. The arm fat will come off when it comes off, as long as you’re still losing. The weight-lifting will actually help, my joke notwithstanding, by keeping muscle tone up. But only whole-body weight loss will get rid of spot fat. No way to make it go away without getting rid of the rest, too.

Oh, okay. I just couldn’t remember your stats and stuff. It’s crowded in here.

Yeah, we keep getting smaller but we also keep getting new people!
