2009 - a woman as Commander in chief ?

how likely is that?

It feels too damn strange for me

Pretty unlikely, since the election will be in 2008.

Yes, but whoever gets elected in 2008 won’t actually be CIC until January 20, 2009…

Yes, but the President-elect will not take office untill 2009.

If women can be CIC’s in Israel and England, I don’t see why it’s a problem in the US.

Can you elaborate as to why?

I’d say the odds are something like 1 in 4 (that’s my own calculation and it’s grounded in little gambling experience). That’s pretty likely compared to where it’s been in the past.

Of which country? You list your location as C Europe, and that covers a lot of countries. Or are you asking of the U.S.? In which case you must mean Hillary Clinton or Pelosi. There’s no way Clinton’s going to get elected; I’ve no idea about Pelosi.

Why is it so strange? Maggie Thatcher did okay.

In fact, my prediction is that if a woman wins, she’ll be a real hawk. The type of women who get elected as leaders of countries tend to be the ‘Iron Lady’ types, because they have to be to overcome the fear that a women is too soft to lead.

And you’ll notice that Hillary has been trying to position herself that way. You don’t hear a lot of namby-pamby talk from her about terrorism or the war. She’s been a strong supporter of the Iraq war, and one of the few Democrats to refuse to demand a date for withdrawal. Hillary’s very smart - smart enough to know that to win the Presidency as a woman in a time of conflict, she’s got to project a very hard and aggressive attitude towards threats to the country.

I think it unlikely. I see no woman capable of taking the election. Hilary is too polarizing. She is likely to cost the democratic party the votes of the middle who right now, IMO, will vote against Bush (yes, he won’t be running, but I believe that many of the middle will vote against his memory.) I don’t see it happening.

Clinton has a much better than than Pelosi. The only way Pelosi’s getting into the Oval Office is if Bush and Cheney both die.

Ooh, say that again…I got a chill down my back…

Benazir Bhutto, on the other hand. . .

As to the OP: Why in hell not? It’s about damned time, sez I. No earthly reason that the US shouldn’t have a female leader.

Newt’s mistaken beliefs notwithstanding.

I don’t feel any stranger about a female CIC than I do about someone who has never served as CIC. We’ve certainly had our share of non-combatants and draft-dodgers in high-ranking government offices in the last 15 years. The best we can hope for is someone who doesn’t feel the need to leave a bloody legacy.

Oops. That should have read “never served in the military”.

Yeah, like John Adams. I definitely feel strange about that guy having been president without having served in the military.

President of the USA
Commander in chief

It’s the same thing, but sounds quite different

President of USA: Hillary Clinton
Commander in chief: Hillary Clinton

I just can’t see a woman as Commander in chief

I somewhat find that a bit hard to believe

I’ve known lots of poweful women. I have no problem at all seeing a woman as commander in chief.

the question is if the awerage american have a problem with it

There’s only one way to find out, isn’t there? When a woman is nominated and wins election for President. Personally, I think the average American would be fine with the right woman. It would take some convincing for me to believe that Clinton or Rice is that woman, but I believe the first female American President is now living, and I’ll be surprised if it hasn’t happened in the next 20 years.

I don’t understand why you’re so bewildered by this; where are you from?
