You know spring is almost here when it’s deadline day.
Summary of today’s trades:
[ul]
[li]Antoine Vermette to Columbus - Pascal Leclaire and a 2009 2nd Round Pick to Ottawa[/li][li]Jordon Leopold to Calgary - Lawrence Nycholat, Ryan Wilson, and a 2009 2nd Round Pick to Colorado[/li][li]Andy Wozniewski to** Pittsburgh** - Danny Richmond to St. Louis[/li][li]Mikael Tellqvist to Buffalo - 4th Round Pick to Phoenix[/li][li]Petteri Nokelainen to Anaheim - Steve Montador to Boston[/li][li] Olli Jokinen to Calgary - Matthew Lombardi, Brandon Prust, and a 1st Round Pick to Phoenix[/li][/ul]
Waiver moves:
Martin Gerber to Toronto
Eric Reitz to Toronto
Brendan Morrison to Dallas
Craig Adams to Pittsburgh
Calgary is definitely an early winner. Picking up Jokinen and Leopold is huge. But it looks like they’re over the cap so they’ve got to dump some salary. Maybe they can throw someone to Toronto along with a pick to get under the cap.
So is the Phoenix bank account…not surprised that they’re dumping salary.
Other news:
Ottawa has resigned Filip Kuba to a 3 year/$11.1 million contract.
Buffalo has resigned Tim Connolly to a 2 year/$9 milllion contract.
Los Angeles has resigned Erik Ersberg.
Also, Calgary is receiving a 3rd Round Pick as part of the Jokinen deal.
Ottawa inexplicably re-signed Kuba to a 3-year deal for $3.7 per. I’m furious. It’s just an awful deal all around. That’s way too much money for a guy who’s been a millstone around the neck of our PP, and who doesn’t defend well either. Ottawa would have been much better to trade him for picks and prospects.
Mark Recchi and a 2010 2nd Round Pick to Boston - Matt Lashoff and Martins Karsums to Tampa Bay
Toskala is out for the year which sort of explains the Gerber pickup. I wonder why they just don’t use Pogge and Joseph down the stretch. Winning games is not what the Leafs should be doing and when are we going to see what Pogge has.
I don’t get the Kuba signing…my first reaction was that he’s not worth that kind of money. But I don’t see a lot of Sens games so I know I might’ve been wrong.
There are actually rumors here that the Coyotes may be the first team in years in the big 4 leagues to actually fold the franchise. I’m not sure how valid the rumors are, but the Coyotes are bankrupt.
Scottie Upshall and a 2nd Round Pick to Phoenix - Daniel Carcillo to Philadelphia
Nik Antropov to NY Rangers - 2nd Round and a Conditional Pick to Toronto
If that conditional pick turns out to be a 3rd Round Pick or even a 4th, I’ll be happy.

[li]Derek Morris to NY Rangers - Dmitri Kalinin, Petr Prucha, and Nigel Dawes to Phoenix[/li][li]Dominic Moore to Buffalo - 2nd Round Pick to Toronto[/li][li]Erik Christensen to Anaheim - Eric O’Dell to Atlanta[/li][/ul]
Even if that is the case, worst case scenario is that Olli tanks and they lose a late first round pick and Lombardi. We aren’t talking Leeman for Gilmore here…
[ul]
[li]Kevin Lalande to Columbus - 4th Round Pick to Calgary[/li][li]Kyle McLaren to Philadelphia - 6th Round Pick to San Jose[/li][li]Justin Williams to Los Angeles - Patrick O’Sullivan to Carolina[/li][li]Patrick O’Sullivan to Edmonton - Erik Cole to Carolina[/li][li]Sami Pahlsson to Chicago - James Wisniewski to Anaheim[/li][li]Steve Eminger to Florida - Noah Welch and a 3rd Round Pick to Tampa Bay[/li][li]Travis Moen and Kent Huskins to San Jose - Nick Bonnino, Timo Pielmeier, and a Conditional Pick to Anaheim[/li][/ul]
There’s probably some draft picks to be thrown in there and a minor Leaf deal that hasn’t made it through yet but that might be it.
Ales Kotalik to Edmonton - 2nd Round Pick to Buffalo
Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers, and a 4th Round Pick to Toronto - Richard Petiot to Tampa Bay
WTF is that about? Nevermind.
It’s a salary dump by Tampa Bay. $2,000,000 off of the Lightning’s cap and the Leafs get a 4th Round Pick for the trouble. Pretty much…
I’m assuming the condition is. at minimum, the Rangers make the playoffs. Won’t be a 3rd, and the Rangers don’t have a 4th. Probably be a return of the 5th the Leafs gave to get Hollweg.
Anybody in Edmonton excited about Patty O’Sullivan? [crickets]
Anybody in LA excited about a 27-year old, 30-goal-scoring, cup winning, gritty winger (Justin Williams)? HELL YEAH.
Lombardi is building this team for the real deal. “We go and face a team like San Jose, and we’re very small on the wings. We’ve got to continue to address that.” Gunning for #1 not 7 or 8: I LOVE THAT.
