2010/2011 Ashes series

Also, if you have a laptop and internet connection you should be able to get test match special.

I do sympathise, I was away with work in the US for two weeks during the summer when the world cup started. I watched the England - USA game alone, in a bar in Mystic CT…god that was depressing!

I’ll put this in spoilers for Cumbrian and others who aren’t following live…

Damn - what a start for England! Having Aussie 2 for 3 wickets doesn;t happen very often. I see they’ve recovered to 94/3 now though.

96/4 now…

No Test Match Special for non-UK listeners :frowning:

that is a shame, it does look like the IPlayer is going worldwide via subscription soon so hopefully that will help a little.

Too late for poor Cumbrian though. Never mind, I’m sure by using a famous search engine and looking for “Cricket Streaming” (or similar) he’ll be able to find something to suit his needs.

and a review of the day…I won’t use spoilers now as those who wanted to know already do.

Australia all out for 245. Solid bowling and fielding from England but I feel that Aus. did gift us a good few wickets. That more than anything might make them feel less than hopeful.
England batted out the last over without problems. This is poised like an exact reversal of Brisbane but with England in the driving seat. Can we turn the screw?
Roll on the witching hour…

Two matches in Adelaide so far in the Sheffield Shield:

New South Wales batting first 529/6 declared and 6/0; South Australia 255 and 279 (after following on)

and

South Australia 452/8 declared; Western Australia 295 and 311/6 (after following on)

and the team batting first has lost 6 of the last 8 tests at Adelaide.

So if England get going in their first innings either we lose or we pull off an England to save the match on a turning wicket.

A great piece of “I wish I hadn’t said that” commentary today. On ABC radio Jason Gillespie, after the second ball of Graeme Swann’s 26th over opines, “Lots of English commentators thought that Swann would be the English danger man but he has hardly looked menacing.” Swann in to bowl…

“Oh, he’s gone. Classic off-spinners wicket, Collingwood takes the catch.”

And one ball later …

But who is going to turn it for you? and if it turns for them will it already have started turning for Swann? (already hints of it on the first day).

Fascinating yet again.

No I mean if England get 450 in their first innings Australia will have to bat out the match on a turning wicket against Swann. I wouldn’t want to bet on that.

No, you are right. I think this could well be set up for him to shine, and 450 is not unrealistic if Cook gets going again.

Mind you if we gain a lead we have a spinner with a career first class bowling average of 48.86. Although his average against the MCC is 74.00. But surely he could win us the test if we set you say 800?

Normally, I’m reluctant to read too much into a good bowling performance until we’ve had our own first innnings. But with run-outs accounting for two of the wickets, and solid scores from Hussey, Haddin and Watson, it does seem like it’s possible to do well with the bat on this pitch.

On the other hand, we thought we’d had a flying start last time we were at Adelaide, so let’s not get carried away. [/voice of doom]

If only you had a useful spinner somewhere in the ground, perhaps in the channel 9 commentary box? what was his name again?

I think we would wet ourselves if we saw him twinkling in to bowl.

Getting played off the park at the moment.

A fragile batting effort gave the bowlers a poor target to defend.

True, we haven’t the fire power to blast out wickets but the lack of purpose to bowl line and length and keep the score tight is alarming. When we ruled the roost about 1/3rd the overs were maidens, at the moment it’s half that.

This unimaginative lark of bowling to a field with three on the leg-side boundary, how exactly are they going to take a wicket with that … getting the Poms bored through walking three singles in an over?

None-the-less I find myself remarkably sanguine about the Poms being in the driving seat.

I’ve worked out our tactics. We are going to wear out Cook by having him spend hour after remorseless hour out in the field. He’s only missed a little over 3 hours all series, after his dismissal in England’s first innings in the first test. So it’s over 2000 minutes since he’s had a break.

I heard on TMS that he’d only missed 11 overs in total for England’s innings.

Impressive, but worrying if he were the only one in form. As it is, KP looks like he’s stepping up to the plate.

Looking forward to the afternoon session if we still have wickets in hand, the last hour before declaration could be fun.

And Australia dance for joy as the heavens open. Pleut ca change.

Shame about the weather. Gives Australia a much better chance of saving the game, and also gives their fielders a mental break. Teams rarely bat well after spending a solid two days in the field.

Hard to see how this match could have gone any worse for Australia so far. The only time I’ve seen England dominate an attack like this were the two home tests against Bangladesh before the 2005 Ashes. Pietersen and Bell are in top form, and Collingwood got his 40 at a good rate. In the first innings, Swann found his form, and he’s going to be crucial in the second if we are going to force the result.

Picking Doherty has backfired badly. I know Pietersen has tended to faint at the sight of left hand spinners in the last 18 months, but that doesn’t seem to be a good thing to base your selection strategy on. Will Hauritz come back now?

I see what you did there.

And now the weather throws a spanner in the works. What now for Strauss?
If the forecast is to be believed there may be interruptions for the final two days.
Muggy conditions? movement for the bowlers? stop-start for the batsmen?

I reckon we’ll kick ourselves if we don’t give our bowlers enough time. So treat the first session as a 20:20 and add a quick 100 if possible. 400+ ahead would mean Australia having virtually no chance of posting a target and every chance of our bowlers to attack.

I admit this might be wishful thinking on my part as I’ll be awake for the first hour so would like to see some fireworks before I retire for the night.

That is ridiculous. He is obviously the answer to our no Shane Warne problems. He is disposing of your batsmen at an average of 134.00 so all we have to do is score more than 1350 per innings and we will crush you.

Interestingly someone in the England party made a comment about Doherty’s selection. He said that England were happy with it because Pietersen has a long history of tearing up left arm spinners.

Was never going to be easy to bowl out Australia on this pitch, but a decent effort so far. Would have been Australia’s day, but for Pietersen’s late strike. Very finely balanced now, especially with the forecast.
