I’m up for it. Though I’ll probably get pummeled. I used to play chess a lot, and I played on ICC but I haven’t played much in the past few years.
That’s 11 players. One more and I’m cutting this off so we can get started. glee doesn’t accept PMs, so I guess we have to telepathically contact him.
i’ll play. i suck. but i can be a confidence booster for the other folks.
OK, so apparently there are 13 players, 14 if you count spark240:
Chessic Sense
Hamlet
Oredigger77
Malacandra
Fubbleskag
Maserschmidt
Garygnu
Edward The Head
Autolycus
Ivan Astikov
Cort
MindWanderer

Anyone want to weigh in on time controls? Should we do this live or with a 3-day per move schedule? If live, I vote for G30+5s.
Well there’s no way I can play live. I would prefer 3 days per move, this way I have lots of time to think about my bad moves.
Another vote for 3 days per move.
3 days per move. normally i can last 30 - 40 moves. so 6 - 8 months per game. single elimination means 4 rounds. about 3 years. round robin means the first round lasts about 8 years. yeh, i can see this working out.
how bout we just pm each other and schedule a time within a window where we just go after it.
i mean shoot anand v topalov has been running in the 60s, right?
that would take a year to play.
some of us might lose interest after that amount of time.
crud, i’d probably blow through wifes 3 and 4 and be on 5 by the time this sucker would be over.
my 2 cents. ymmv.
Okay, I’ll come down to a day per move maximum.
Who says we have to play one game at a time? That’s not necessarily so, but I think it’s wise.
I could get behind 1d/move if players agree that the other guy can’t time out. I mean, sometimes I forget to log in on a Saturday or something. I’d also suggest that we just PM moves to each other, adding to the game sheet with each new move. So one guy sends:
- e4
and get’s back
- e4 Nf6
and so on. Then time’s not an issue.
I thought we were playing it on Gameknot?
Well, we can but we don’t have to, if that proves too difficult for some people. The main problem with playing on there is if someone misses a day. I don’t think it should go down as a loss just because I couldn’t get to a computer on a weekend or something.
The main problem with PMing moves is that people’s boards can get out of synch. So one person will try to play “Rxc4” and the other will go “there’s nothing on c4”. This can be minimized by adding to the move sheet instead of just stating your next move.
That’s why I want to play live. First, it’s closer to real chess, where you can’t work out variations on an analysis board before deciding on a move. Second, the games will be over faster.
Edward, why can’t you play live ever? You’d only have to spare an hour or so once ever 3 or 4 days. Are you in an inconvenient time zone or something?
It is too late for me to enter?
Nope. We need a 14th.
ETA: When I get home from work, I’ll try to order us by skill level. Right now, I have about 3 of you down as “sucks” and a few at “I’ll get pummeled” level, and a “What’s an Elo?”, so this will be very subjective.
I would prefer to play live, although I’m not sure where we would do that at. But I’d prefer not to have this thing last years and years. And if we play it like correspondence chess its going to take forever.
Ok, my last rating was 1500
What’s wrong with gameknot, chess.com, or even yahoo? They’re all free.
I have two little children that take up the rest of my time besides work. I just don’t get an hour free to play. That’s why I would prefer 3 days a move. When I used to play 3 days a move didn’t take all that long as most people seemed to play a few moves a day.
If most people want to play live then that’s fine, I’ll just have to drop out.
gd, your credit score rocks. wanna like co sign some shit for me?
and i certainly don’t want this to happen.
i mean i am not that good but even i can typically find a couple of hours (even if it’s when i would normally be asleep) every once and a while.
i was merely remarking that one move every three days with this number of folks could take a heck of a long time to conclude. i mean i’d hate like heck to lose out just because 7 - 10 years down the road i miss a turn because i was cashing my social security check or the colonoscopy ran a little late.
