Match point for Stan.
Wawrinka ousts Tsonga, coming back from 2 sets down.
France is crying.
Wictory for Wawrinka! He came all the way back, and he’ll meet Federer again in the fourth.
Wawrinka must hate having to match up against Federer again. He plays Fed quite a bit and loses a lot(He’s 1-8 against him). He’s won 3 sets, while Fed has won 18. Wow.
He’s never beaten him in a 3 of 5 set match.
They are friends, but Fed. blows him away most of the time.
Djokovic-del Potro was stopped after they split the first two sets. That may be bad for the winner, but it could be good for me since there’s a better chance I’ll get to see them play. Djokovic won the first set and del Potro the second.
I’m probably setting myself up for embarrassment, but don’t overlook Kuznetsova on the women’s side. While she has had her own consistency problems, she won the tournament two years ago and it seems to me she has a very nice path into the semis with Hantuchova in the fourth round and Bartoli/Dulko in the quarters if she wins there. If so, she could get Schiavone for a shot at the final.
France isn’t the only one crying! I’m feeling a bit misty eyed myself. I knew Tsonga didn’t stand a chance at winning this, but I would have liked to see him make it through a few more rounds. At least France still has Monfils.
I feel sorry for Warinka, he is a decent player but he seems to always end up playing Fed. It is really hard to play against a good friend, especially if that friend always ends up beating the crap out of you.
Del Potro V Djokovic not before 1 pm local time. They will play on Susanne Lenglen, the same court they started on.
The commentators on Eurosport said there was a mini riot outside the court to let the people in who held tickets to see them play on Chatrier. It was moved because of the Tsonga Warinka match went long.
Nadal wins so quickly today I didn’t even get to see him. Murray has also passed through to the next round.
Wow, I hope Murray is okay. He’s been playing fabulously. But that rolled ankle looks pretty serious, at least when you see it for the 100th time slowed down.
Nadal looked great. Of course, his opponent didn’t really show up so that helped him.
Waiting anxiously for the Djokovic/Del Potro continuation.
Del Potro is about to take set 3.
Uh, nevermind. I read the score wrong. Djoker about to take set 3.
Womens draw at the round of 16 is strange:
Top 3 seeds on the womens side are now out of the tournament as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (hate to be signing those autographs) beats #3 Zvonareva.
The draw looks wide open. I can’t imagine the bookies have a definitive favorite as they play into the Quarters. and i think Wozniaski retains the #1 spot in the rankings. even though she has only played one only final of a grand Slam event and that was almost three years ago.
Mens side: I would bet for the top 4 seeds reaching the semi’s.
Nadal possibly has Soderling in the Qtrs, but should beat him.
Murray has the 15th seed in the round of 16, and an unseeded player in the quarters.
Federer’s quarter is the toughest with all players seeded 14 or below in his quarter still playing.
Novak is just playing too well for anyone to beat him before Fed.
She was in the final of the U.S. Open in 2009, which is less than two years ago. It makes sense that Wozniacki will be staying at #1 if you consider the fact that her closest competitors - Clijsters and Zvonareva - also lost early. The highest ranking player left is Azarenka, and she came into the tournament with about half as many points as Wozniacki. She’s #1 based on the fact that she made the semis of the U.S. Open in '10 and Australia this year, and has made a ton of other finals. I’d pick against Wozniacki if she’s playing Serena or Clijsters, but those two and the other top players are just not returning consistent results these days. That’s why she’s still number one.
Djokovic is about to finish Gasquet in straight sets, and Fabio Fognini - maybe you remember I was his booster last year - has reached his first major quarterfinal by winning a very long match, 11-9 in the fifth. Of course, he gets Djokovic next. Federer didn’t have much trouble with Wawrinka (as always) and he’ll get Ferrer or Monfils next.
I still think it’s a really interesting thing that Soderling does so well on clay. I forget which retired champion pointed out recently that Soderling just doesn’t move that well, which keeps him from staying with the top couple of players. You would think that would hurt him on clay because he mostly gets by on sheer power and doesn’t move that well. My theory right now is that the clay doesn’t blunt his power all that much because he just hits so damn hard, and the surface gives him some extra time to get to his opponent’s shots.
Schiavone is in trouble here - she’s down 3-4 in the third against Jankovic, and Jankovic has her at 0-30.
Schiavone rallied to take that game, broke Jankovic’s serve, and held on to win the match. She’s through to the quarters (against Pavlyuchenkova) and seems to think she can win this thing again.
Eurosport was saying that Fognini shouldn’t have gotten treatment during that last set with Montanes It isn’t clear whether it was cramping or an injury. Was it gamesmenship?
IMO, we should never have to debate whether or not an injury time out is legitimate because they shouldn’t allow injury timeouts. End of story.
Saw the end of Li Na’s match. I’m so impressed with her. And she’s darling in interviews, too.
Djokovic is still looking unbeatable to me. Nadal is going to have to come up with another gear if he hopes to beat him. Federer is looking sharper but Djokovic isn’t afraid of him anymore, so that gives Djokovic a huge edge. However, that would be a great match-up (presuming that Federer can take out Nadal).
I wonder how Murray’s ankle is doing. Anyone hear? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
Well, he pulled of of the next match with Djoko, so Djoko is through and has 4 days off. Mats Wilander said it too many days might hurt him in the long run.
So Djokovic into the semis already as stated and more than likely will be playing Federer, what odds are you all giving Novak to make it to the finals?
And what about Nadal v. Soderling? I’ve been able to watch about two hours of this whole tournament, Nadal not included, so I hear his play is pretty “meh” compared to what we’ve seen. Another win for Soderling if he keeps a cool head?
Also, some women are playing in this tournament too. Thoughts on them?
I think that question was answered when Fognini withdrew a full day before he was even supposed to play the biggest match of his career.
What purpose would that serve? What I would like to do here is link to footage of Shuzo Matsuoka rolling around on the ground with leg cramps during the '95 U.S. Open, but I can’t find it online. The New York Times described it this way:
Federer and Djokovic will play in the semis if Federer beats Monfils. Nadal is on the other side of the draw, and he makes the semis he’ll get Murray or Troicki. Murray made a great comeback yesterday, but Troicki is about to serve for the match at 5-3 in the fith.
Schiavone was just about blown off the court in the first set. We’ll see if she can bounce back.
