2012 NCAA March Madness (Men's) thread

Baylor getting destroyed by Kentucky, but as I was typing, Anthony Davis went down hard and is clutching his knee. The big is amazingly talented, but he looks fragile as hell. Well, he got up and walked off; have to wait and see if he’s really hurt or not.

ETA: Okay he’s hurting pretty bad. Since Kentucky is ahead by 20 points, there should be no reason for him to go back in the game, IMO.

EATA: Wow, he’s actually going right back in the game. Stupid move, I think. He ought relax and let his teammates play, at least until it becomes a tight game. I hope he doesn’t hurt himself again and nix the rest of his career.

I caught about ¾ of this game, including the ending, while I was at work, and yeah, the officiating sukt ass.

OTOH, Aaron Craft is great fun to watch. I like scrappy defense-minded guards, and this kid plays with a ton of energy and enthusiasm.

Now that it’s set that Kentucky will be playing Louisville in the semifinal, how will Wildcat fans choose to respond to this witticism from Rick Pitino:

"“There will be people in Kentucky that will have a nervous breakdown if they lose to us,” Pitino said. “They’ve got to put fences on bridges. There will be people consumed by Louisville.”

Possibly the main concern for Kentucky fans attending the Final Four: if you plan to dine out at a restaurant that has banquettes, better bring plenty of Chlorox Handi-Wipes. Remember, Pitino’s in town.

I have to say this–my dad is a UL fan (went there) and my aunt is a UK fan (went there and so much so that she has pictures of her dog in UK wear as her profile pic in Facebook). I’m goading them both on! It’s awesome.

For what it’s worth? Go CARDS!

A U of L and UK Final Four matchup is friggin’ SAWEET for the state of Kentucky, and for me personally as a Kentucky fan. YOU’RE GOING DOWN, PITINO!

I’m amused that regardless of which team won the UK/Baylor game today, that school would be the only school that still had a team in both the women’s and the men’s tournaments for at least a few hours.

The UK women have won their game tonight, so Kentucky still has both teams alive at least until Tuesday evening.

Not that this is a meaningful statistic, it’s just kinda cool.

This UL and UK matchup is going to be like the Hatfields and McCoys…families torn asunder by the weight of divided loyalties…its going to be crazy.

I, for one, am thankful that the Tar Heels were defeated. If they had made it to the title game, they would be facing a team that I – being from Louisville and a graduate of Kentucky – have a connection to. And since I live in North Carolina at the moment, that’d lead to me having to put up with more nonsense than I feel like I really need.

So which one do you root for, or are you one of those rare birds (natch) that roots for them both? I knew a few Kentuckians that actually like both teams, as unconscionable as it is to me!

It’s just tiresome in the Lansing market seeing him every freaking day during basketball season. He’s a bit of a whiner, in my opinion.

What happened to this thread people?

GO CATS!

I don’t want to jinx my Jayhawks by claiming outright that they will beat Kentucky. After all, I had them picked to lose in the second round in my bracket this year. And they will be in big trouble if they dig themselves a hole early like they’ve done most of the tournament. But this team has exceeded expectations all year. (One sportscaster in Kansas City picked them to finish no higher than fifth in the Big 12!)

If the team that showed up to play North Carolina in the Regional final shows up again on Monday night, we are in for a heck of a game.

GO JAYHAWKS!

And once again I have the correct finals matchup in my bracket. And once again I’m sure I will miss it, and drop from first to 10th because of it and miss the money.

Aaaaargh, my Buckeyes. What a tough loss. They needed Sullinger to really step up to make up for Deshaun Thomas’s bad game, but that big white kid on Kansas gave him fits all game. Bill Self was smart to take him out when he picked up a foul early and preserve him for the 2nd half. Ohio State got totally outworked inside.

And Thomas Robinson is a stud. He’s quick for a PF.

I couldn’t give the UK/Louisville game my full attention but what I thought I saw was Louisville let UK pretty much run out the clock. Why weren’t they fouling? UK was only 11 for 20 from the line.

I am rooting for KU rather than UK tomorrow night. I really dislike the Calipari One&Done B-Ball model and if UK does win, maybe it will spark debate and who knows how long UK will be able to keep this championship. Guaranteed that there is going to be some attempted muckraking .

I sincerely do not believe the Kentucky’s principle players are attending bona fide classes if they are attending any classes at all. And, if true, it is against the spirit of the NCAA.

You mean the NCAA’s model, right? Like it won’t be news to you when I point out that calling it the Calipari model is total bullshit?

like maybe people will start saying “I can’t stand the rule. One year is not what this should be about… Billy Hunter and the Players Association own the rule. It needs to be changed. It’s not a good rule." Right?

Attempted muckraking will be sure to prove something! The good faith is choking me!

These sincere beliefs, what are they based on? Is it the same thing that your idea that the NCAA has a “spirit,” even though they’re the ones who designed the current system, which Calipari is easily the best at running and does far and away the best things for his players within it, is based on?

I struck a nerve.

That post was my opinion, and based what I think and believe. No, I do not have any proof and I did purport it as facts.

I do not like the model, no matter what team it belongs to. I think once a scholarship is offered, it can not be re-offered for at least three years, no matter what happens to the player. If he leaves after one year, that scholarship is unavailable. What is good for UK is good for UNC and UCLA and UT and the rest of the teams.

I don’t want to take the NBA opportunities away from the talented kids and the One and Done option is still available to them. But I don’t think schools should be exploiting it.

Yeah, you landed a direct hit to the nerve that people hit when they say things that don’t make sense.

You strung together three points remarkably efficiently: Calipari is somehow responsible/culpable for “the one and done model,” Kentucky’s win, if any, is going to be stripped, and Kentucky players don’t go to class. You tell me - did any of those make sense?

So let me see if I understand, Calipari shouldn’t try to recruit the best players possible? And of course, no one else would recruit these guys since they’ll be out after a year.

It’s just great. The sainted Boeheim has one national championship, on a team led by Carmelo Anthony. How long did he stay? Oh that’s right, he was a one and done. Kylie Irving, Austin Rivers, how long did they stay at “we do things the right way” Duke? Hmmm, one year.

Any program in the country would be glad to have these guys, because they will help you win. And if you don’t want your team to win, why are you cheering for them? Would any of you said, hmm, sorry Anthony Davis, we know you’re going to leave, so we don’t want to have you here. Bullshit.

Personally, I think the rule is bs simply because if you’re 18 you should be allowed to work for whoever you want. No one gave Bill Gates crap for leaving college early.
