I’m glad you tried it, sorry I didn’t come back for a while! As a spaghetti replacement (and it’s really easy) spaghetti squash, roasted in the microwave or oven, tossed with cooked ground turkey, diced tomatoes, garlic, olive oil (or buy a can of diced tomatoes, garlic ad olive oil) and (if you have to) a little cheese on top (very little, cheese is really high in fat). If you go without the cheese, you have an almost perfect meal balanced with complex carbs, fats and protein. Cheese jacks it up the fat.

Banana fritters or berries (with whipped coconut milk, just the solids, and a little vanilla).

YUM!

Weighed in at WW with a BMI of 24.5. So completely normal if on the heavy side of normal admittedly but 35 lbs lighter than 3 years ago to the day. Lost the first 20 pretty easily, the next 15 hung around through b-school (unsurprising).

I am now on a bikini body and toning plan, along with training for my first half marathon. I am up to running 5 consecutive miles now.

If anyone is using the Lose It! app and wants to be a motivation buddy, PM me and we can exchange emails.

Oh, lord, I tried to make an orange-carrot smoothie today and it didn’t go so well.

Heheheh! You can’t just post that and not give us the whole story! Spill the beans!

Well, I’m afraid it’s not the most exciting story. It turned out all chunky and didn’t taste good. I am having a hard day and was really looking forward to trying a new recipe, so it was kind of a downer.

My WOD (Workout of the Day) is 3 separate tabataexercises - sit ups, lunges and overhead claps. It’s amazing how much pain can be squeezed into just 12 minutes. But I’ve decided I prefer 12 minutes of intense discomfort over 60 minutes of moderate discomfort, so it must be done.

I’ve thought the only way to get carrots into a drinkable form would be to roast them first, but I’ve never experimented with it.

I’m going on the assumption that you didn’t juice the carrot first, because you said it was too chunky.

If you want to experiment with veggie smoothies or fruit-veggie smoothies etc., get a juicer and then blend in the magic bullet or your blender or whatever. I have a Breville and it’s amazing.

Oh, yeah I don’t have a juicer. The girl who gave me the recipe said it worked just fine in her blender, but she used more greek yogurt than I did (I couldn’t fit it in there by the time I had everything else.)

I can definitely understand why you’d put the whole carrot in there for the “fiber” and stuff, but I suspect the caliber of blender I own would probably not be able to handle it. I bet a Vitamix or something of that quality might work, but I’m going to be honest and say it sounds plumb disgusting to me without juicing the carrot first, so you’re a brave soul for marching forward with that one.

Bit of a sugar bomb but carrots are also high in sugar…mango orange rather than carrot orange? Mango has the right texture to blend nicely.

My weight has been doing the Bouncing Betty routine for a few months. Lose a lot, gain it slowly, lose it again. Lather, rinse, repeat. It’s really frustrating because it seems to be related to my menstrual cycle (I’ve been tracking this) and that the weight I’m gaining back is water weight. I’m still within 2 lbs of my goal weight, so I’m good as far as that goes. I’m just sick of Bouncing Betty.

Ohai, everyone, may I come back?
Two years ago, I lost 20 pounds doing low-cab. Then life got more stressful, with a lot of travel and taking care of elderly parents, and I starting eating carbs again. Specifically, potatoes, potato chips, and, when I was with my parents, breads. (My diabetic Dad eats very very little bread, but my mother, who has an entirely different body type and metabolism, eats lots and lots of bread). I’m assuming my body wants the serotonin for an antidepressant effect. As you have guessed, all that weight came back.

Over the last few years, since I reached the age my father was when he was diagnosed with diabetes, I’ve tested my fasting blood sugar, and now the numbers are, every so often, creeping into the pre-diabetic range. I’ve wondered if my thyroid, always at the lowest end of normal functioning, is getting wonkier, since weight gain has been persistent, I’ve started feeling cold at times, and my neck has been sore, and some days I’ve been so fatigued i haven’t been able to do much of anything. On those days, it seems as if the food I eat isn’t being turned into usable energy, but is stored, instead. So I wonder not only about the happiness of my thyroid, but also about the ATP cycle and the mitochondria.

I just don’t have it in me to be as strict with my diet as I was before. I am trying to add in more non-starchy veggies, to make sure I get more micronutrients. I don’t buy bread or pasta, and in most restaurants I can leave it.

Walking several miles during the day, lifting weights, and meditating keeps my blood sugars in the nice, healthy normal range, and that’s about all I know of to increase and encourage mitochondria. Timing is important: a two or more mile walk before breakfast seems to kick up my metabolism and make me happy. When I was a lot younger, I used to run five miles before breakfast. I don’t expect to be able to do that again, but being active right away in the morning really works for my system.

Oh, and I found a great, short workout, called the T-Tapp total workout. I looked at pictures of it online, and immediately thought that it looked too easy to be effective. However, I got the video anyway, and it is a really good workout, and really does trim up the body. I look as if I weigh 40 pounds less than i actually do. As I’m about 65 pounds overweight, that’s pretty good.

Thanks for letting me natter on! It feels good to say all this to people who understand.

Welcome back, Tapiotar!

I also avoid bread, pasta (and also potatoes). Let me know if you’ve got any recipes to share!

I am a big fan of quinoa pasta, and I’ve found that if you shave a zucchini lengthwise it can make a pretty good pasta substitute.

I’ve felt like ass all week, but I’ve done my workouts and I’m definitely getting fitter. Today someone I see on a regular basis looked at me and said, ‘‘You’ve lost weight!’’ Gotta love that.

Tabata is one of my least favorite new words. One of my coaches is always saying, “But is has the word rest in it! That’s good!” Mmmmm, 10 seconds rest is just enough to be a tease, IMO. Now that you mention it, though, at least it gets you into and out of pain quickly.

I am getting really frustrated with my lack of upper body strength. I’m just not making the gains that I want to be, and someone suggested that maybe I’ve reached the limit of “n00b gains” where a person can still gain strength while cutting calories. BUT…I have such an issue with making myself eat more. I think this is where My Fitness Pal has a limited usefulness for me before it starts to become detrimental and I turn obsessed. Having any of those numbers in the red (meaning I’ve gone over for the day) makes me really crazy.

Tapiotar, welcome!

Thanks!
I have made “hash browns” from radish sticks. With a lot of onion and seasonings added, they aren’t too bad, but they don’t give the same emotional satisfaction as real potatoes. I usually prefer to go without something than to have a fake version of it.

If you are not entirely off starches, here’s something that has helped my husband start to get the potato cravings under control is a roasted blend of one cup each of bite-sized pieces of new potatoes, onion, celery and carrots, tossed with a little olive oil, garlic, rosemary, salt & pepper, roasted at 400 degrees for 30 minutes in a covered casserole, then another 30 minutes uncovered (makes 4 servings). It tastes great, pretty low-calorie, works as a side with any number of dishes, and makes him feel like he ate a lot of potato, even though there was only a very small amount in the serving. The WW points work out to about 3 per serving.

Bleh, I undid all of last week’s good work with a bad week this week. Had a headcold for a few days and I indulged. Nevermind, next week will be better!

I’m having the same problem, but in my case, it’s just 3-4 pounds that I keep losing and regaining…for months now! I’m so sick of this. I feel like I make so much effort and spend so much time feeling hungry, and there’s nothing to show for it. The only thing that’s keeping me from throwing in the towel is the fear of regaining and needing to buy clothes in the next size up (I gave all my clothes in that size away).

And I’m so close to my goal weight, too! This frustration is killing me.

I just came in here to say almost exactly this. Plus this extra 5 pounds has my acid reflux acting up again, and it was nearly gone before. Grr. I wonder if it’s the winter weather and the body saying oh wait, it’s cold, add on some fat. Maybe when (IF?) spring gets here we’ll find the extra 5 have gone away? Please?
