2013 Weight Loss & Healthy Living Support Thread

104.2kg on the scales this morning, taking my total weight loss to 25.2kg (55.5 pounds). Looking to be on track to get to sub-100kg for my late August trip to San Antonio! happy dance

Since leaving WW and using My Fitness Pal, I’ve really been able to focus on a gluten-free, low-carb eating plan. I’ve noticed that as a result I’ve been low in fibre on some days so I need to get better at balancing it all. I’ve got some fibre sachet drinks but I need to balance my food a bit better, I think. Some days last week, I only got 10 - 12g of fibre. With summer finally here, I will eat more avocados!

Have any other gluten-free low carbers noticed improved skin condition? My skin has never looked so good!

Weigh-in frequency, food logs, etc. can very well vary, depending on what kind of person you are. Anyone with a predisposition to eating disorders or obsessive habits would be well advised not to cater to their illnesses. Serial dieters can be seriously fucked in the head about food, which is why there’s sort of a backlash against too-detailed food logs, daily weigh-ins, calorie logging of all activities, and the like.

It is ultimately up to you as to how you tackle tracking progress. I’m both a bit lazy and not really all that concerned about what I do as long as it works. When I was trying to lose weight, I kept semi-detailed records for the first couple of months, along with pictures. I kept track of progress in all my workouts.

Now, I weigh in at most weekly. I do very occasional spot-checks on intake depending on my performance progress or my weight trends. My weight has been solidly within the same ±2 kg for years post-weight loss, aside from deliberate attempts to increase weight for performance reasons. IOW, if the scale readings changed outside of a small fluctuation, it was almost always planned.

I still log all of my workouts, but I use those stats for figuring out what to do next, and to see how I’ve progressed over a period. I don’t ever log calories because burn rate is very highly variable, and basically useless for most purposes. The only things I care about are easy to measure and objective. Things like: more weight lifted, higher reps, faster times, better form, added ability, achieved milestones.

Speaking of weight fluctuations, I decided to take a week off low carbing, a little food vacation. I gained 8-9 pounds within a week, and then lost 7 of it back on the second day of low carbing. Pissed a lot. The water weight comes and goes almost instantly.

76kg for me again last week (I’m doing weekly weighs on Fridays, but time varies, depending on when I get to my parents. I deliberately don’t own scales of my own!).

No loss, but no gain, and I’ve signed up for a 5k run next month, and been swimming most days this week.

Been workin’ my ass off this week, but my food has been kinda screwy. I discovered granola, and I love granola… a little too much, because I already ate it all. I’m trying to come up with a list of perfect breakfasts that I can work into a rotation. Must be high protein and wheat-free to qualify. This should be my heaviest meal of the day. So far I’ve got pumpkin flax porridge, and I just found a recipe for homemade quinoa granola… yum. Today I’ve been super lazy about food prep though… I just ate a spoonful of peanut butter rather than actually prepare food for lunch.

My coach wants me to try to drink a gallon of water a day. It’s not an insignificant amount of water. He says if I don’t feel a change I can back off. But I don’t know what change I am supposed to be looking for.

Today I went out in the rain and got all muddy and grass-stained and wet during my workout. It was kind of awesome.

My trainer had me install a water app on my phone. It’s an annoying bastard that sounds like water running, or a toilet flushing if you will. It measures your water intake. Another thing that helps is 0 calorie flavored waters. Very cheap, and good, IMHO. Propell 0 is one, Sobe makes them, there’s also 0 cal. Vitamin water. I find them easier to do than plain water. I basically don’t even do the diet soda anymore !

What was the name of the app? I’d like to check it out. The only liquids I drink any more are milk and water. The thing is I already feel like I’m pounding down water all day, it’s sort of hard to imagine drinking even more. But I’m curious what the result will be so I’ll go ahead and try it.

Water your body, But there’re other as well, search “drink water app” or somesuch. If you add one to your phone, be sure to silent it in a meeting, because the explanations are awkward.

I’ve heard of 2 liters of water but a gallon? Oy.

Of course, I do drink that much liquid in a day (2 l of water and all sorts of other stuff).

I have been looking into clean eating and want to join you all but the big stickler is beer.

It’s summer and I want my beer on the patio.

A great alternative to soda is carbonated water. It’s very soda-like and will help you kick the soda habit all together. La Croix is one brand that is sold in many stores. There are plain and flavored varieties.

I don’t drink them anymore, but I once kicked the soda habit with Izze carbonated fruit drinks. Real fruit, carbonated, fewer calories than soda. It’s a good intermediary step if you still want a sugary liquid.

Four weeks ago I completely changed my diet. No more processed foods, sugar, white flour or alcohol. I gave up my beloved diet soda–I used to drink at least three 20 oz bottles a day. I’ve added fresh fruits and vegetables and snack on salads rather than potato chips. This combined with a somewhat nontraditional yoga program has resulted in a loss of 15 lbs in 4 weeks. I gotta be honest, this is the best I’ve felt in years and I know it will only get better.

I hear you. It’s been just over three months of clean eating for me. It’s amazing to me that I ever lived any other way.

I weighed in at 177.2 today which is the lowest yet and brings my weight loss since November to 15 pounds. Most of that has started to come off since I changed my diet in March.

My Coach told me that I am an athlete in a fat suit now. He meant that as a compliment. My workouts have been getting longer and more intense and I’m having an easier time sustaining myself through them.

This morning I made the most delicious homemade granola in the world: Quinoa granola.
Ya’ll gotta try this. We’re taking it on the hiking trail today. I can’t wait!

Apparently this eating clean and healthy and almost meat free thing makes your body unused to rich food. At my belated birthday lunch, I had filet mignon, which was amazingly delicious. Two hours later, I was treated to a fine evening of stomach cramps and diarrhea.

Healthy should not equal no more yummy rare steak. Grr. Also, apparently I can weigh 163 pounds the day before my period starts and 148 the day it ends. Is there even a point to owning a scale if I can fluctuate that much with just water weight?

Oh dear, Schrodinger’s Platypus, I’ve had that happen to me, too! I do find that a little of what I fancy goes down OK but it is a bit trial and error.

I’m feeling a bit stuck in a rut at the moment, I really need some new evening meals to keep things interesting.

That’s hilarious! I stepped on the scale for the first time in weeks yesterday and was up 5 pounds.

I was seriously unimpressed until later that day when Aunt Flo arrived. It all made sense.

Okay so I am sliding my way into clean eating (a little tough with little ones and a husband who are so not willing to go along) and I have a TMI question.

Did anyone else get the runs for the first few days? It’s pretty awful but if it goes away I can push through it.

No, but lots of farting. However, I definitely get the runs when I have rich foods, that’s always been the case for me.

It takes time for your body to adjust.

I don’t dare risk a fart!

Well, the rapid rate of descent has decreased, but not plateaued, and while it’s more like a half-lb. loss per week now, it’s still going down (and still averaging 6 lbs ahead of the goal I set for myself by this time in my goal calendar).

And I haven’t really started exercising in earnest yet, so I think that will change the dynamic of my diet and weight loss (though how, exactly, remains to be seen).

But now, my food choices are second nature, so I can go to a baseball game and leave satisfied and not take a massive hit the way I used to. So I’m very pleased with how things are going…
