2014-15 Barclays Premier League Thread

I really only care about CL and the EPL title. The FA Cup just doesn’t mean as much as it once did, when English football was an almost exclusively domestic affair.

I say this as someone who has been a Chelsea supporter since the late-'70s (when they were wallowing in the old Second Division, and their best player was Ray “Squareball” Wilkins).

Thanks to all for your thoughtful comments. Of course, I was really hoping for someone to tell me that the most impressive achievements of all are winning the League Cup and Europa League.

One hell of a weekend, wasn’t it? Of course, the highlight was City simply demolishing Newcastle; one of the MCFC twitter accounts I follow called it “football porn”, and that’s about right. You almost felt bad as a City fan… but nah, not really. If that wasn’t enough, the Trafford scum lost to the swans and Chelsea dropped points. Plus, Mourinho decided we weren’t paying enough attention to him lately, so he decided to do another Mourinho song and dance.

Mind you, it was some truly horrendous officiating from what is normally a fairly reliable senior official. A more tactful, far-sighted man might have taken the opportunity to open a dialogue about the quality of officiating generally, perhaps about video technology. But this is Mourinho, so he delivers the world’s most cryptic post-match presser, followed by a visit to the Sunday morning talk shows* to do his best to start the “agenda against Chelsea” thing again, but this time without getting a ban.

  • Why don’t we get Sunday morning sports programs? Our Sunday morning talk shows are a platforms for a bunch of bloviating windbags to grandstand on. So, kind of like Mourinho’s performance, but every week.

“Pride cometh before a fall”. Sorry, I don’t know how to say it in Catalan.

And Spurs can still say that we’ve been to the Champions League quarterfinals more recently than Arsenal…

Yeah, well. Typical City. Bonus, we can still gloat at the gooners. Also, tip of the hat to Besiktas for dragging LFC into extra time. Could’ve kept the PKs going for at least a few times through the XI, but we can’t help it that Liverpool decided to flub it. (This antipathy towards Liverpool is temporary; after Sunday, I’m back to hoping they finish higher than the rags and, ideally, edge them out of the top 4 and send them to the Europa League of Death.)

Heck, all we have to do is win the next leg by at least three goals…

Yeah, that’ll happen. I’m…uh…confident.

Was that convincing?

Well, it is only little old Monaco, after all.

All I know is that the decision to press for an equalizer instead of sitting back and settling for 2-1 home defeat (after a sublime strike in stoppage time to even get to that point) has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen on a pitch.

And the fact that Wenger wasn’t screaming at his side to get back and keep their shape is entirely on him. Just ridiculous.

Um, he was.

Really? I didn’t see any clips that seemed to show that. Do you have a cite?

Here’s the goal: http://arsenalist.com/f/2014-15/arsenal-vs-monaco/monaco-goal-1-3-carrasco.html. The clip starts after Ox has already lost the ball, and there is exactly one defender on the Arsenal side of midfield. Kos challenges for the ball at midfield instead of running back. Ox stops running for some reason (he was a late sub, so he shouldn’t have been tired). Mertesacker tries to run back but we all know he’s not the fastest player in the world.

It was just horrible defending from a horrible setup that should have been realigned after the possibly tie-saving goal. Instead they kept pressing high up the pitch. If Wenger was telling them to sit deep and see the match out, then his players certainly weren’t listening to him.

Sorry that I am late to this thread, but I only just recently found this site. I am a Liverpool fan. This season has not gone as I had hoped, but I have enjoyed some good games along the way.
YNWA!

Who knew Scousers could use the internet?

You mean you were there, you were there, you were there when you were shit? :)Well, congratulations on your League Cup win, then, although presumably you don’t care about it!

Welcome. City fan here, but now that the unpleasantness at the weekend is done (and fair play to your lot; you were far and away the better side on the day, as the cliche goes) I can get back to my usual state of hoping you guys finish above the rags. Double bonus if you manage to edge them out of the Champions League slots.

Bump!

Pfft.

4-3 over Leicester on a Harry Kane hat trick and an own goal!! It just doesn’t get much Spursier than that…

OK, this is pretty funny. This article is on Woolwich but you can find links to your personal unfavorites at the bottom of the page.

LONDON (AP) — Harry Kane scored 80 seconds into his England debut on Friday, providing another astonishing moment in his breakthrough season in a 4-0 victory over Lithuania in European Championship qualifying.

(to the tune of “on top of spaghetti”)

He’s called English Jesus
He’s from White Hart Lane
There’s nobody better
Than our Harry Kane!!
