2014 Formula 1 season

Starts today with the Australian GP.

Qualifying results from the official F1 site: 2014 FORMULA 1 ROLEX AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

Engines limited to six cylinders, turbos added. Eight gears as opposed to the V-8’s seven.

Let the races begin!

I’ve got the race on my DVR, but I can’t watch it until my boyfriend gets back in town. I’ll report back then.

Well, that was fun.

Random thoughts: Nice to see Turbo and Martini livery back. Not so nice to see Massa and Kobicrashi back. Surely there are more deserving drivers.

Not a fan of all the “energy recovery” shit.

It was nice to see Mercedes get the victory, but I was dissapointed my favorite driver Hamilton had to retire, and so early.

That was a fun race. I was disappointed to see Kobayashi crash straight off: he’s usually been an exciting driver to watch.

It appears that Ricciardo has been disqualified for fuel flow issues on his car. Red Bull is appealing, but the FIA’s answer seems pretty concrete to me.

The Kobayashi Maru event appears to be a brake failure rather than just stupidity.

Bizarre race, but I think we all expected that. FIA was probably premature with the double-points-for-the-last-race rule, there’s a good chance things will be jumbled enough that it’ll be unnecessary.

Yeah, one of the new rules is a maximum of 100kg of fuel for the race; Riccardio had more… seems a straight forward decision to me. Can’t imagine how they screwed that one up.

Absolutely gutted for Ricciardo, he even managed to stretch his smile wider than usual when he was up on that podium. Fucking Red Bull, thinking they can do what they please.

Yes, who do they think they are? Ferrari?

I missed this race, probably just as well since I’m a Hamilton fan too (I like his style, and he’s British - that’s reason enough for me). Could be a good season for him, perhaps it will finally vindicate his move to Mercedes.

I don’t believe it was amount of fuel, I believe it was the flow of fuel to the engine that is in question. The FIA-mandated sensors said there was too much fuel going to the engine and told them to drop it down, Red Bull decided that the sensors were broken and ignored the command.

Even if Red Bull’s right about the sensors being faulty (god knows everything else on the new cars is in question), I don’t see how that gets them around ignoring a direct order.

I think that happened last season!

I hadn’t heard about the Riccardo DQ till I read it here. Ain’t that a B!?!

I don’t think Red Bull’s appeal is going to go anywhere, no other teams have had any problems getting the fuel sensors to work.

Mad Dickish of me, but I hope this missing airliner shit doesn’t disrupt the upcoming race in any way.

Trust me. I’m ashamed of myself.

Hah, fair comment! But as I’m sure you realised, I meant that I hope he is more in contention for the title this time.

I missed the first race, but just caught the second practice from Malaysia. It’s gonna take a while to get used to all the new liveries. I’m still not sure I recognize all the teams. Is Caterham carrying Airbus and GE sponsorship?

The cars looked a lot thinner than in years past. Anybody know the exact details? I wonder what that will do for overtaking with each car taking up less space.

I didn’t know about the switch to permanent numbers for each driver. I don’t see the point.

At what point were these go-karts allowed less than 90kg of fuel? The 100kg rule is insignificant.
Much more important is the turbos. Having watched the Melbourne race, and considering the huge reduction in RPM (frankly, something that should have been enforced 10 years ago), it was a rather non-event.

I recommend watching Le Mans for far more interesting racing, where turbos have been allowed since inception, along with diesels, pure electric cars and 4 different classes of racing. Refuelling has, of course, always been a necessity.

The fun thing for 2014 is the ACO has (for the 1st time since the FIA banned Group C cars) declared engines free. Aston Martin or Porsche may come up with a 20L V12 or something to rape the Audi or Toyota diesels… who knows?!

14th June, IIRC.

Not even sure where to start with that…

Nice top two finish for Mercedes. I was surprised how close Red Bull stayed with Rosberg for most of the race.

What happened with Ricciardo’s pit stop?

Pit crew didn’t get his tire back on properly. He also had an issue with the front wing digging into the tire, not sure what caused that.

Funny how it seems like Vettel’s pit stops are flawless and the “other” Red Bull driver has issues. Saw it with Weber, now seeing it with Ricciardo.

Poor Felipe Massa, different team, same team orders. I would’ve loved to have been a fly on the wall at Williams after that race.

I get the feeling that Mercedes have their cars dialled up just far enough to win whilst staying nicely the right side of tyre, engine and gearbox wear and fuel consumption. I suspect they have far more performance should they need it. Like the Red Bull for the last few seasons they seem able to just pop a fastest lap in on demand.

The fact these cars are a bit more of a handful should also play into Hamilton’s hands.
