2014 NFL Free Agency Thread

Nope, nothing similar to actively mutiny and saying there will be one if I am traded: "“I know they love playing for me and I love playing for them,” Cutler said. “There’s going to be a lot of problems if they try to trade me. Well, they’ve already tried to trade me, but if they trade me for sure.”

Cutler got himself traded out of Denver because of his attitude, which is actually quite like George.

Or his bad left tackle, who he hit and pushed during a game. Or his coach, who he ignored and stomped away from during a game. Or fans who criticize him.

Packer fans too are good with Cutler in Chicago. He’s never lived up to his “upside”, has a 9-20 record against winning teams (through 2012), and is now sucking up $18 million a year of cap space. He’s now got everything he whined, pouted, and cried for, and it only cost the Bears their entire defense.

I’m sure the price went up to ensure the Bengals didn’t match, but he’s a 28 year old who’s only had one semi-productive season. And he’s a midget.

He was okay and sometimes electrifying…when he wasn’t hurt. You’re right, I should have stated the terms of the contract but I think the primary reason the Bengals didn’t match, aside from being deep at the position, is the fact that over 5 million of that contract is guaranteed money, which, for a guy in a limited role that’s struggled to stay healthy due to his size, is a lot of money.

The Bengals signed Jason Campbell to a one year deal to be their backup QB. Not bad…there are a lot worse backups in the league and he’s a much better passer than Josh Johnson, our incumbent backup. Can’t help but wonder if the Bengals will carry 3 QB’s or not. Johnson could be an interesting roster retention if Hue Jackson can figure a way to get him on the field…dude has SERIOUS wheels.

Just saw that the Steelers are talking to Harrison.

I’d like to think someone in the front office read my suggestion and gave him a call. But I know that isn’t what happened.

Still, i’d like to see him in black and gold again. He should retire a Steeler. I hope they can work something out that fits the cap and fits what Harrison will agree to pay for. At this point, I doubt the Steelers will offer more than the minimum, since it looks bad the Bengals cut him after only one season. I think most will interpret that as he has little left.

James Harrison is one guy I wouldn’t bet against. He has been released and resigned so many times it’s incredible. If he comes back to the Steelers, it might be his 4th return to the team. I am going to look this up right now!
ETA: it will be his 5th time signed by the Steelers!

Quite a bit of Bears action over the last few days.

The Defense is starting to clarify a bit.

Melton is gone, signing with the Cowpokes and Rod Marinelli for $5M in 2014 with a 3-year club option that ups the average to $8M per. It’s a tough loss, as he was a Pro Bowl talent the Bears developed from nothing, but coming off an injury, off the field issues and rumors of laziness he’s not worth that kind of risk. He’s good enough to live up to that contract, but it’s no sure thing. The Bears are worse without him, but they need to spread that money around.

Idonije is back. After a 1 year stint with the Lions, one of the best dudes in the league comes home. I think he’s got plenty in the tank to be a useful rotational guy. With Melton gone, there’s a decent chance he kicks back inside where he started his career. I’m really happy with this, valuable depth in the wake of Melton and Peppers leaving.

Steltz is back. Meh. Hopefully he’s just a camp body. The guy sucks, and frankly the Bears need someone with upside in the secondary. Forget the special teams ability, I hope rookie takes his job.

McMannis is back. More excited about this move than the Steltz move. I don’t think he’s going to blossom into a star or anything, but he could be useful as a Nickel in a pinch. He’s a better tackler than most Bears CBs so he’s got that going for him. Again, if a rookie beats him out that’s probably a good thing on balance.

Danny McCray is a new body coming in from the Cowpokes. I don’t know him well, but I gather he’s nothing more than a camp body. He’s got starting experience, but the Cowboys secondary has been as bad as the Bears for the past couple seasons. Another guy who may not make the opening day roster.

On offense there Bears have a couple moves in the pipe.

Earl Bennett is being shown the door after refusing to take another pay cut. He’s a cap casualty, pure and simple. A productive player caught in a log jam with a too-big cap number. He’s a good dude, but was just too unreliable to make this move too terribly concerning. He was injured too often and wasn’t dynamic enough. Cutler liked him as a 3rd down security blanket, and he did that really well, but with Marquess Wilson coming up he’s got to make room for the youngsters.

Eric Weems has been asked to take a pay cut, and frankly I hope he says no. He’s a hot head and seems like a trouble maker. Never heard anyone speak out against him, and having a agitator isn’t always a bad thing if it ups the intensity of the whole group, but Weems just seemed like a penalty waiting to happen. We’ll see what happens, with Hester gone Weems may have value in the return game, but again I’d prefer to take a flier on a UDFA and hope we catch lightning in a bottle.

So, with those moves, Tillman, DJ Williams, Collins and Ratliff coming back and the addition of Houston and Young, the Bears defense is pretty much settled before the draft. Wootton is really the only piece left to fall, and Izzy’s signing may have been a response to that.

So, the Bears really need to find a starting quality Safety (or 2), and probably a impact DT and a CB to groom in the first 4 rounds. LB is also an area of need and could be a target of opportunity if a stud slides to them, but odds are that they let Bostic and Greene develop some and hope McClellin can adapt.

Hopefully someone stellar falls to them in the defensive side at 14 (or better yet someone trades up with them a few spots to grab a WR or QB). Right now my draft target is Aaron Donald, DT, Pitt and he’d be a great Melton replacement. I worry that his stock is skyrocketing to the point where he’s a top 10-12 guy but pre-combine he was a late first rounder, so time will tell. I don’t love any of the DBs who are targeted in the top 15, so the more I look at it the more I want to get out of that #14 spot.

I think whoever ends up with Donald will be pleased with the pick. He is a player, and I am very happy that he has been rising up the draft charts. Unfortunately, the Pitt program doesn’t get the focus it used to, but they do churn out a few good players and some great ones from time to time.

I would love to see the Steelers get Donald. Not only would he be a great young addition to an aging defense, he would be the first Pitt player taken in the first round by the Steelers since the forgettable Tom Ricketts, a guy who did nothing in the NFL. After screaming at the team when they skipped over Dan Marino, there have been many Pitt players skipped by the Steelers that have turned iN great NFL careers, in some cases HOF careers.

The last guy I screamed for the Steelers to draft was LeSean McCoy, but no… They let the Eagles grab him and the Steelers grabbed… Drumroll… Ziggy Hood. They had grabbed Rashard Mendenhall in the first round the year before, so no one expected the Steelers to take a RB, but the kid could play. I watched him in person that entire season and he was a man among boys. A beautifully fluid runner and a great pass catcher.

The last guy I remembered looking so dominant in a college game that I saw in person at the RB position was Michael Westbrook from Villanova.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think Harrison’s impact as a locker room guy was invaluable to younger Bengals players like Vontaze Burfict. He didn’t get on the field much for the Bengals (and I don’t know why, really) but he was actually a surprisingly interesting character while in the Cincy locker room for a year.

Personally I think Harrison is done, partly due to age and partly due to the league cracking down on his favorite mode of tackling (with his helmet), which diminished his efficiency. But yeah, were I a Steelers fan, and I throw up in my mouth to even type that, I’d want him to retire as such.

Isn’t he just a terrible scheme fit? He’s only really useful as a pass rushing OLB. He can’t play 4-3 DE or WLB, that’s for sure.

I think you mean Brian, but yeah, his pre-draft rankings were embarrassingly low. I feel the same way about Ka’Deem Carey. People are screwing up on his evaluation. He’s going to make many GMs look stupid and one GM look brilliant.

I wish I had more time to go over what the Eagles have done (and not done). What I will say is that it’s really refreshing that the organization has a clear direction. All of their moves make sense, everything fits.

Looks like free agency is close to over for the Bears. Corey Wootton signed with the Vikings for around $2M for 1 year and Devin Hester signed with the Falcons for 3 years, dollars not yet disclosed. I’d say Eben Britton is really the only important piece left.

The loss of Wootton is a biggie. The Bears added 3 DEs, making it a squeeze to keep Wootton, but he’s a guy that was really starting to play well. He kicked inside in 2013 in the wake of all the injuries at DT and wasn’t particularly effective there, but at DE in 2012 he was an emerging star. Injuries have always been an issue with him, he had offseason hip surgery which probably played a role in the Bears hesitance, but when he was 100% he could really set the edge. I’m not thrilled he went to a division rival. There been an awful lot of that this offseason in the NFC North - Peppers, Young, Wootton, Idonije, Guion, MD Jennings.

Hester had a very good year last year as a returner and I think he’s got some gas left in the tank. Not sure what the Falcons are paying him, so that’s a big question, but I wish him the best. I’m fine with the Bears moving on, we need fewer specialists and we need to use those roster spots to try and develop starters, but I will really miss watching punters shank balls out of bounds trying to keep it away from him.

I think you’ll be in luck. Rumor has them being interested in bringing him back but it probably won’t happen (if it happens at all) until after June 1 and they know where they stand depth and salary cap-wise. Woodley will be off the books by then and they should know what is required to sign the draft class. One big hinderance is that he probably can’t contribute on special teams anymore and that’s one of the biggest roles back up LBs have to perform.

I’d like to see him back for a year for his work ethic alone. They’ve already brought in Joey Porter to mentor Jarvis Jones and the Bengals’ coach mentioned that he went from being first at practice every day to being second after Harrison was signed. I think they want some of that to rub off on JJ.

Panthers have signed Jerrico Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood. That will help the back end of the WR corps. Now they need a #1. They are rumored to be discussing DeSean Jackson with the Eagles. More likely they’ll try to get one in the draft.

Patriots re-signed Julian Edelman, who had been flirting with the 49ers, to a four-year deal at $17 million, with $8 million guaranteed. He emerged last year as Brady’s most reliable target and was an absolutely critical re-sign.

They also added Brandon LaFell at $11 million over 3 years.

I wasn’t thrilled about losing LaFell, but he drops more balls than he should.

Glad to see he got a contract in the league. He’s a great guy, does a lot of work with kids, gives back to the community, etc. That said, I won’t be drafting him for my fantasy team.

Harrison does have an amazing work ethic. He wasn’t one of those number 1 draft picks who had everything handed to him. He was humbled early and often in his career and it was great to see it when he finally caught on full-time with the Steelers. He had a great run in Pittsburgh, it would be nice to see him wrap things up with the black and gold.

If Harrison does come back, odds are it would be for league minimum with the Steelers. But. I hope he takes it. Knowing him, he’ll bust his ass even in a back-up role, and he’d even play special teams if asked…

Cotchery is a great pickup for the Panthers. The Steelers will miss him. He is a class-act, and now with both Sanders and Cotchery gone, it looks like they will have to draft another WR. let’s hope they do what they have been doing and try picking someone up in round 3 or later. No more Limas Sweeds, please!

I was hoping the Steelers were going to re-sign him, but the Steelers have been going with a FA WR to round out their corps for a while now. They will probably sign some other guy with a bunch of years under his belt to be that possession receiver. I know they were looking at a couple of guys, one from the Saints if I’m not mistaken.
I don"t want him, but what happened to Santonio Holmes?

And I heard that the Jets cut Sanchez and signed Vick. That tells me all I need to know about what they think of Gino long term. They saw enough of him last year and they don’t believe they can win now with him. Vick will start unless he’s injured in pre-season.

I hope Sanchez lands somewhere and does well. I thought he got a raw deal in NY. The media chewed him up and spit him out, and he may now be too old to become that elite QB the Jets hoped he would have turned into. I know his stats weren’t great, but I think if he came out of college and went to a different team with a different coach, he may have had a different career.

He’ll be someone’s backup this year.
I’m also hoping the Steelers sign MJD, too. I think he has one good year left, and if he’s not an every down back, he could prolong his career in Pittsburgh. But the Steelers can’t really pay anyone, so I doubt he’ll sign, at least not until the market shakes out. RB’s are not exactly a hot commodity this off-season.

They signed Lance Moore for 2 years/5 Million.

Cotchery’s wife is from the area so when he started negotiating with Carolina they knew he would likely be gone. I think Lance Moore will be a good signing. Seems to be the same type of player as Cotchery, just a bit shorter.

Going back to Harrison. I don’t think it’s his willingness to play Special Teams but his ability to get downfield. Regardless of that, I agree with you that resigning him for the vet minimum would be a good move if they don’t add too many more through the draft. Hell, sign him up as assistant Strength and Conditioning coach or something. We already know his work ethic makes the rest of the group better.

Thanks. Missed this until just now.

Can anyone tell me the terms they signed Moore for, and what the Panthers signed Cotchery for?

I know I had to read something wrong because it looks like both guys signed for the same amount. That can’t be right, can it? As I understood it, the Steelers wanted to keep Cotchery, so they wouldn’t lose him only to spend the same money on another guy, would they?

Seems Moore is younger, but he’s shorter and I already know what Cotchery can do in the Steeler offense. I don’t know anything about Moore except what I read on the stats sheet. But I think the Steelers could regret losing Cotchery. I guess we will see.

They wanted to sign him; he chose another team.
