2014 NFL Free Agency Thread

I don’t know…this seems a bit like the NFL’s version of “Minority Report” in light of Aaron Hernandez to me.

Yeah, we’ll never really know why the Eagles cut him. Could be as simple as he had a huge cap figure (almost $13M) and they wanted some of that back (he’ll still be $6M in dead money, but they’ll save $6.75M), and the whole gang thing was just a convenient (or even manufactured) excuse.

The fact that he’s a 6 year vet and none of this other stuff has floated up to the surface until now, at least outside Philly (I don’t know; perhaps a Philly fan can provide some insight), makes me lean toward the simple money-saving/convenient excuse explanation.

It is interesting. Every team is a Billion dollar operation more or less these days. I’m sure they all have many investigators, to point toward what they feel like, and if each of the teams interested, and the media all came up with major questions in a week, then is it false smoke, or is it fire?

That being said, gee a head-case receiver, I can’t guess where he might end up.

New England or Oakland.

That’s exactly what I think. It’s a deep draft for WR talent this year, so the Eagles must be confident that they can find a cheap replacement for him. All this supposed gang stuff was put out there so the fans wouldn’t be upset.

Even worse, I think it’s just character assassination. I can understand teams worrying about future Hernandezes, but the Eagles don’t seem to have gotten concerned about these “gang ties” until a couple of weeks ago and the police are not really backing up the team’s story. They may have had some concerns about his character but I think this had more to do with his price tag and his relationship with the organization.

I know…and it’s weird…dude just recently signed a new contract and had a great season and is one of those guys with that rare speed and agility to take it to the house at any moment. I’m sure he won’t lack for suitors.

Hell, I hope my Bengals pick him up. Him, AJ Green, Giovanni Bernard, Jermaine Gresham, Tyler Eifert, etc would be pretty scary.

FGE- Do they still have “the law firm”?

I wonder if the $250,000 cash and guns theft had anything to do with it. There are a lot of holes in that story. That incident, along with the gang rumors, may have been enough for the Eagles to decide to cut their losses now, rather wind up with an Aaron Hernandez or Titus Young situation later in the year.

Yes, although he’s inexorably being relegated to a short yardage/relief role as Bernard has emerged as a stud. I see the Bengals drafting an RB within the first 3-4 rounds though as BJGE’s low YPC isn’t really justifying his pricetag anymore, unless it’s one of those “you can’t put a pricetag on veteran leadership” type of things.

Of course, you are probably making a joke WRT DeSean Jackson’s potential legal issues vis a vis representation from “the Law Firm”.

It’s odd that less than 700 yards rushing, a 4.1 ypc, and being the 4th best rookie RB is all it takes to be a “stud” now.

C’mon, I know you’re just messing with me right?

700 yards rushing, 5 rushing TD’s, 56 receptions for another 512 yards and another 5 TD’s…that’s not a studly rookie campaign when your running mate BJGE had 220 carries and you’re sharing receptions with AJ Green, Jermaine Gresham, Tyler Eifert, Mohammed Sanu and Marvin Jones, whom had 98, 46, 40, 47 and 51 receptions respectively?

You’re referring to who I meant.

Backup from a Pittsburgh fan ain’t what you expect I’m sure but I don’t think Bernard’s numbers tell the whole story. He has to be accounted for on every play. I have no doubt that his teammates posted better numbers because of the threat he posed. The Steelers have always done a good job shadowing receivers but with so many new pieces in the front seven, the secondary (particularly the safeties) had to divide their attention and the receivers took advantage of that. When Bernard was in they knew what technique the corners were playing because they had no choice; it had a noticeable effect.

Yup. And looking at Andy Dalton, he had 363 completions last season. 15% of those went to a rookie backup running back. The other 300 plus went to the other five guys mentioned in my previous post…all WR’s and TE’s. That left about 13 receptions to the 4th and 5th WR’s and the 3rd TE.

Maybe we have differing definitions of “stud”. I don’t consider guys like Bilal Powell, Lamar Miller, Rashad Jennings, Ben Tate, Lagarette Blount, or the dozen other guys with comparable numbers to be studs. Adrian Peterson, stud. Chris Ivory? Not so much.

Eddie Lacy had 500 more yards, a higher ypc, and twice as many touchdowns. Zac Stacy put up almost 300 more yards. Hell, even Andre Ellington had 1.5 ypc more than Gio. And those were other rookies.

Maybe Gio develops into a stud. But calling him one now, after not even being the best rookie RB? That’s a stretch.

Patriots signed NT Vince Wilfork to an incentive-laden 3 year deal. He’s coming off a season-ending achilles injury. I am happy with the deal - it lets the Pats see if he can get back into his usual stellar form: if so, he gets paid; if not, it won’t cost an arm and a leg. I hope he gets paid, 'cause he’s worth every penny when he’s healthy.

They also lost LeGarrette Blount to the Steelers. Blount did yeoman’s work for the Pats last year and I am sad to see him go, but they’ve got other options at RB, assuming Ridley can stop fumbling.

Anybody know the truth about DeSean Jackson? Is he another Aaron Hernandez in the waiting, or is the gang stuff all bullshit somebody’s spreading to get his price down?

I doubt that it was a smoke screen as it all but killed Philly’s chances of getting anything for him. Even his cap number would not have stopped a cap flush team like the Browns or Jags from tossing a draft pick or two Philly’s way for him. Now, someone can and will get him fro nothing. It sounds like Jackson’s main issue is that he refused to listen to warnings to distance himself from his gang friends, more than he was active in the gang life, so there may have been more team chemistry issues than just the gang connection.

It didn’t kill their chances of getting value for him. They did, by cutting him. The “breaking” newspaper story is based on information they almost certainly fed to the reporter, since it wasn’t exactly new news.

My perception is that Chip Kelly doesn’t like DeSean Jackson, so he said fuck him. It’s absolutely far closer to a smokescreen than it is to an Aaron Hernandez… no one has even suggested Jackson did anything.
