Aren’t they busy tinkering with DL to try and take account for the rain break stuff? I think they’ve added an S (Stern) to the DL, so it’s not DLS, who is busy trying to address this. The process by which this formula is created is necessarily iterative, so if they’re not incorporating this, they will probably give it a go in the future, as I think you’re right that it currently is a hole in the method.
A quick google search reveals that Stern is working on the DL now - but it remains a bit of a black box. He has done something to it, he’s just not saying what!
But it’s just as hard for the bowling side. The wet ball is notoriously harder to grip (witness the SA bowlers working on keeping the ball dry nearly every over), it’s tougher for the fielders to catch a slippery ball, and sometimes a ball hit to the outfield will either a)Plug on landing - advantage fielding side or b) skid on - advantage batting side.
It’s too hard to say whether a rain break advantages one side over the other. There are differing conditions, too, between different geographical centres. it’s just one of those luck-of-the-draw variables you cant do much about.
It basically came down to two shots. Twice in the last 4 overs Elliott basically mis-hit a ball straight-up into the air. the first landed EXACTLY between 3 fielders with none able to get a hand on it. the second landed EXACTLY between two fielders leading to the collision (and if anyone says someone should have called ‘Mine’ like they used to do on the country oval, consider the noise level at the ground).
If either of those shots is placed about 1 metre in any other direction, SA probably win.
The Aussie slips are two paces too far back it seems…
I’d take McCullum instead of Guptill - he doesn’t score as much, but he does it damn quickly, leaving more balls for the rest of your batsmen. And what’s Faulkner done to deserve selection?
