Yep. They played 11 OT playoff games that year. They lost the first one, then won 10 in a row.
Ottawa was playing very badly, and I said “well, this is it” about 30, 40 seconds before the OT goal. Very disappointing that they decided that was the time to have one of their bad periods.
I’d like to say I’m happy it was a great run, but I’m not. Of course the playoffs were much more fun than if they went out in the first round, and I agree Guy Boucher got a lot out of the team, but if you lose, you lose. This was a golden opportunity to face a so-so team in the Stanley Cup Finals, and they lost it. No one remembers the team that lost the conference final, and unfortunately this isn’t a young team with big prospects for next year.
I feel bad for Erik Karlsson, a great player who deserves a better supporting cast so he was win the Cup he richly deserves.
I want Nashville to win now, just for the Montreal factor.
Oh yeah; I’m totally rooting for Nashville now.
Good god, I thought I was either going to throw up, pass out, or have a heart attack. Seriously, those last two OTs, I was practically hyperventilating and peeping through my fingers. Thank the hockey gods for Kuni.
One for the thumb, bitches!!! Get to it!!! (Sorry Nashville, I’m really happy for you all, and I’m gonna let you finish, but…LET’S GO PENS!!!)
Go PREDS!!!
(P.S. I appreciate the overall civility of the thread. I hope that doesn’t change. Hockey is the best!)
I so want Nashville to win this. The Penguins are a great team but so many people will flip out to see PK Subban celebrate with the Cup, well, I want to see that.
Yup!
What the hell is this all about?
Subban is a credit to the game of hockey.
What that is, is a demonstration of who is a great hockey player and (as you said) a credit to the game, and who is…not.
Pronunciation of “Penguins” in Pittsburgh.
Last game I watched from Pittsburgh I thought the arena announcer almost slipped up and introduced the team as the Pirates.
Again tonight, and twice, it sounds like he’s saying “your Pittsburgh Peye-nguins.”
What’s that all about?

I’m not a big hockey fan, but I like reading playoff threads.
I don;t know anything to speak of about Subban. Is he the guy who was the target of racial name-calling in Boston a couple years back, or was that somebody else? (I know about the racial slurs in fenway–I’m pretty sure there were examples from hockey too though). If he is, that’s about the sum total of my knowledge. That, and that he used to play for Montreal (I hadn;t been aware that he was now with Nashville, which I guess shows you how closely I follow this sport).
I see from this thread, though, that there are a lot of folks out there who wish him ill–is it just because of his race, or is there other stuff going on?
If anyone feels like describing the background for me in simple and straightforward terms I’d be all ears, um, eyes. Thanks.
Subban, to some people, is a bit of a showman. He gets super excited and likes to celebrate goals, especially his own.
Some people believe that he’s being centered out because he’s black. There may be some truth in this, especially after the Boston comments.
He’s a great player and was very loyal in Montreal before he strangely got traded for a similar player of an older age. Hell, he even made a pledge to donate $10,000,000 to the Montreal Chidrens’ Hospital. A pledge he is still keeping.
Until recently, I didn’t think it was possible that race is a factor in any of this. I have sincere doubts now.

The Pittsburgh Penguins certainly seem to be the masters of the cheap shot, one of the dirtiest hockey teams I’ve seen. Yeah, they’re going to win this game and perhaps the Cup but this team is scum.

I think that was Joel Ward.
Subban’s a very outgoing, very enthusiastic, life of the party kind of guy. He’s the type who’d be right in the thick of things, goofing off and being the center of attention. And yes, some of it’s because he’s black.
SOME of the shit he gets is deserved, however. He’s definitely a pest, he takes cheap shots and can be somewhat dirty. He’s no Matt Cooke, but he’s not going to win the Lady Byng any time soon.
(As far as celebrating goals, I don’t know why he gets grief for that. Celebrating goals is pretty much standard in hockey. Look at Tiger Williams back in the day!)
Rules Q…
Apparently a Predator got injured in the Pen’s end, stayed on the ice for more than a minute. I know the whistle cannot be blown until his team gains control of the puck. Yet, while he was down, I counted the number of Predator skaters in their (defending) zone, and it was 5. Why didn’t they get a penalty for too many men on the ice?
Well, if that was the case it should have been too many men.
Overturning that goal was total BS. The announcers tell us that the refs are seeing the same replays that the TV audience sees. I’m watching on a 48" HD screen and it was too blurry to make a definitive determination as to whether the skate blade was on the ice when the puck crossed the blue line. The refs are looking at a pad.
The call on the ice shouldn’t be overturned unless there is definitive evidence. The call on the ice should have stood.
Also, Subban is one of those guys that has a “larger than life” personality. On media day he took a mike, turned the tables, and started asking questions. He went up to Mike Fisher and asked him what it’s like to be so good looking. Classic! Oh yea, he’s uppity. Can’t have that.
I doesn’t matter if his skate was on the ice or not, as long as it was over the line, before the puck and without the player having full control.
Also, the plays are reviewed at NHL headquarters in Toronto. The linesmen and refs may be looking at iPads, but hockey operations in Toronto is a little more sophisticated.
And if someone was “offside” (who says it doesn’t matter if his skate is on the ice? that’s all the talking heads were talking about!) a full fifteen seconds before the goal was scored by a totally different person, how could that have anything to do with the goal, and why should that ever EVER result in a goal being disallowed??? Why yes, this “rule” makes me furious. I am (probably) not going to watch any more hockey until/unless they fix this crap. Makes the league look really stupid having this happen in the first game of the finals. As someone said, a 10 minute delay for this really gets the new viewers excited about hockey.
