2018 Masters

This was hilarious. Half the posts were about the press spending too much time on Tiger.

I will add this observation: having watched some of the older Final Round broadcasts available on YouTube, Augusta National has held up very well over the years. Of course, some of that has to do with lengthening the course, and some of it has to do with the fact that the greens are now insanely faster than they were in the 60s and 70s. It’s quite interesting to see that pin placement in the final rounds back in the 60s and 70s was quite different from the “traditional” placements used in the last 20 years. Jack’s monster putt on 16 in '75 was to a back right hole location!

Were we wrong?

Whether the press talks about Tiger too much is a matter of opinion.

But it is undoubtedly hilarious that people who think the press talks about Tiger too much, spend half their posts about the Masters talking about Tiger, when he was never contending, and got very limited network coverage three days out of four.

But even the old crackers at Augusta know what’s what, and had him in the Masters.com webstream featured group every day, so his fans could watch him without offending the tender sensibilities of True Golf Fans. Should have been a win-win, but you guys just couldn’t stop talking about him anyway.

Actually, yes; most of the headlines the day after were about the winner and the chase to win. While some online sites talked about Tiger, most major media (especially written) said very little about him, as far as I could see.

But I think the post was pointing out the irony of having lots and lots of posts complaining about how much attention Tiger would get.

Just for the record, here are the current golf headlines on ESPN.com, from most to least recent:

  • From 3 miles away, Patrick Reed’s family wept as they watched him win the Masters
  • Patrick Reed doesn’t care what you think, he’s the Masters champion
  • Rory McIlroy, Jordan Speith, and their two different Augusta Nationals
  • Tiger Woods’ compassion toward a fan battling lung cancer wins the day
  • Despite falling short again, Rickie Fowler says ‘I’m ready to win a major’
  • Ups, downs, ankle dislocations, Tiger, Phil and Sergio: This Masters had everything
  • Tiger Woods nostalgia ruining golf?
  • North said Reed did what he had to do to win
  • How Spieth nearly pulled off the greatest rally in Masters history
  • Patrick Reed’s win at the Masters through his caddie’s eyes

I think the sports media was simply enamored of the idea of Tiger maybe, possibly, conceivably making a run at the majors record, and when the results came in it took a huge amount of wind out of the sails. If he’s just as lackluster at the US Open, expect the party to be well and truly over, but he’s a huge enough name that he won’t disappear entirely for a long time yet.

Nah, the post was about a one-trick pony barging into a thread to fellate his hero and attempt to insult nonbelievers. Nothing new here…

Stay classy.

Back atcha. Just like your hero!
