2008 Masters: Discussion thread

Just a thread for general commentary and updates throughout the tournament.

Not much happening yet. The start was delayed for about an hour by mist. Something called Heath Slocum is currently at the top of the board at -3 through 8. Tiger has not teed off yet. Neither have most of the other big hitters. I’m going to be boring and predict Eldrick will win.

Update:

Leaders at -2:

Poulter
Ames
Lyle
Hansen

There’s about a dozen players at -1

Tiger is Even through 9.

Several notables (Mickelson, Singh, Cinc, Els Furyk) still have not teed off.

I just turned on the TV to see Tiger lining up a chip shot - it showed him at +2 after 14. Of course his chip went right into the center of the cup for an eagle to get him back to even par. Justin Rose is -4, Mickleson -2 and putting for birdie.

Tom Watson +3…hope he makes the cut.

Brandt Snedecker is in second at -3 and still has 4 holes to play. Doing quite well for his first Masters as a professional.

Tiger finished at even par for the day. Recovered well after a couple of bogeys.

Pretty uneventful day out there today. I happened to be in the right place at the right time for Ian Poulter’s hole-in-one, which was exciting. Other than that, there were very, very few loud outbursts from the gallery today.

The course is in as good a shape as I’ve ever seen it (that includes things that bloom), which I hope will make up for the mud pit we’re likely to see later in the weekend.

Is it me, or did Tiger look bored while he waited on the bench at the 4th tee? They flashed a picture of it later in the day on ESPN.

I bet $10 on Steve Stricker winning. Anyone have any thoughts?
He is number 4 in the world and was paying 60-1.
Currently he is one behind Woods.
How many people who are not big golf fans actually realise that his name is Eldrick?

Those greens are just amazing.
I can’t think of any other tourney where you see the pros almost look scared at some of their chips and even putts.
Seeing those approaches to 16 drift down to the left was just insane.
And the way lip-outs almost seem to build up speed.
Nice looking leaderboard. I hope it holds up.

Looks like my man Brandt is in the lead through 12 or so.

Wow!
Immelman’s in the house at -8.
Lotta players got some ground to make up.

He’ll come back to the field over the weekend. It seems like every Major has at least one nobody who shoots a really low round and gts buzz for a day. Then they go out and shoot an 82 the next day…especially if they get grouped with Tiger. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

This is his second day posting the lowest score. I agree that he’ll probably come back to earth after he’s spent a whole day dreaming about that green jacket, but he’s very far from being a nobody.

Immelman is a very solid player. I wouldn’t be so surprised if he won.

Tiger’s falling apart.
+1 on todays round and for the tourney.
9 strokes off the pace.
Stick a fork in him - no WAY he could ever make up that much ground!
:stuck_out_tongue:

Lets see how he finishes…If he is down 9 starting Sat…he is done.

*I do understand you are being silly, but 9 down to start the weekend…NO CHANCE!

Tiger’s not out at 9 back. Retief tied for second after making the cut on the number, so it’s possible to come from way back. Heck, look at when Tiger won in 2005, he ran off 7 consecutive birdies in the third round.

Shit, he’s only 7 back.
I just hope the rest of the field doesn’t cooperate and do it’s patented weekend fade…

Four back now. I think if he’s within three of the lead at the end of the round, there’s gonna be some sleepless nights in Augusta tonight.

Starting to see some backing up now, although the leaders are hanging in there. Strange things happen at Augusta on the back nine on Saturday, and the leaders are heading to Amen Corner.
