Wow. Thanks for making me feel better.
Finally, here’s a good thing that’s happened in this so-far-terrible year.
I received an email today saying that summer camp will be open this year! Yay!
Registration is only in person during a few limited times
Why that’s a great idea during a pandemic!
Over in another thread I don’t wanna link to, some Dopers I normally respect are whining about their state’s governor having prioritized teachers over old fucks, for the Covid vaccine.
Their side: “we’re more vulnerable! Guv’nor caved to unions!”
My side: retired old fucks being vaccinated does jack diddly squat for the economy. At least if teachers are vaccinated, then schools can re-open, taking pressure off WFH parents who are doing double- or triple-duty.
I thought we liked edumakashun around here?
Also, teachers get shat on endlessly as it is. I can’t believe sane Dopers think it’s O.K. to pile on just because they’re not at the front of the line for vaccines.
We all wanna be at the front of the line, assholes. You retired old fucks can continue staying home and being a drain on the economy.
While I usually agree with you and tend to think you’ve got a good head on your shoulders, maybe you might want to reconsider this part of your rant.
I am a retired old fuck. I have been staying home. I have been collecting my pension (which I worked for all of my life) and most of that money is going into the bank. I’m not sure if drawing out money I put into the system is what makes me a drain on the economy, but if it is, suck it up. I worked and saved and scrimped for over 40 years, I deserve to retire.
Before the world ended, we only ate a few meals at home. Now we eat out once a month. We started doing expensive touristy stuff on a weekly basis, but now that money stays in our bank account. We used to do charity events almost monthly. Those have stopped and that money stays in our bank account because we forget to donate without reminders. I love visiting local shops, I always find something I didn’t know I needed. Those unnecessary shopping trips are gone, that money stays in my bank account.
The economy needs us old fucks to feel safer so we go out and spend money.
Working parents spend money - lots of it. Working non-parents spend loads of money, too.
My point was that everyone wants to be first in line.
I’m saddened, but not surprised, that people with a decade or two of life expectancy are trying to trample the 20-somethings who are, yanno, contributing to society, just so they can be first in line - or whine endlessly about not being considered a priority.
(Disclaimer: I am not a 20-something.)
Another old fuck here, with several co-morbidities. I’m perfectly willing to wait until teachers get vaccinated. But not healthy 20-somethings.
I’m a little on the notion that elderly people are a drain on society. That’s some uncomfortable language. It’s also important to keep in mind that elderly people are at the highest risk for this awful malady. I’m not making a value judgment about which lives are more important - is that really who we want to be?
Certainly we should protect our teachers, but if we cannot yet vaccinate the children, how does this enable schools to re-open? Kids will still be able to spread it to each other. And teachers will likely still be able to spread it to kids.
I don’t envy the people that have to make decisions about who is getting vaccinated first. It’s hard to be right and being wrong has steep consequences.
Regardless, I have a pregnancy related minirant.
I am in my second trimester. The magical part of pregnancy is supposed to be happening. Instead, I am sitting at my desk, focusing very hard on writing this post to distract myself from the fact that I am this close to vomitting everywhere. Fuck you morning sickness. You are supposed to be gone by now.
First, I have never whined about when I would get the vaccine or my place in the priorities. I have in fact volunteered that I am completely willing to continue staying self-isolated for however long it takes until essential workers are vaccinated, even though that comes at some cost to me like painful social isolation and depression, postponing non-urgent dental, medical and rehab care, problematical access to goods and groceries inevitably at greater cost on a very limited Social Security budget. The feds haven’t said “heh, we’re increasing your SocSec by 10% for the duration so you can still get groceries and essentials delivered, since that costs more. We want to make it possible and tolerable for those vulnerable to stay home while we vaccinate essential workers such as teachers”. Nope hasn’t even been recognized, much less happened.
I have complained about my asshole governor who won’t give the vaccine to meatpacking workers (providing meat is pretty damn essential and has been very high risk of Covid) unless they can provide proof of citizenship or a green card. Go call him out and insult him. His name is Pete Ricketts, Nebraska (R). He and his family owned Ameritrade and now still own the Vhicago Cubs baseball team and Comcast Sportsnet Chicago.
Please stop calling out and insulting me or all elderly with that broad brush. We come in all stripes and colors. And in what way are we “drains on the economy”? Cause we don’t want to die early so others don’t have to be inconvenienced by not going to bars or restaurants?
This rant is a couple days late, but fuck Leslie Stahl with a red hot poker. She has interviewed Trump multiple times for 60 Minutes over the course of his presidency, and has consistently lobbed him softball questions and gave no pushback to any of the lies he spewed.
In her interview with Nancy Pelosi a day or two after the assault on the US Capitol, Stahl apparently decided that now was the time to act like a tough hard-hitting 60 Minutes correspondent. So, fuck you Leslie.
Yeah, I was wondering why she was being so hard assed. It was like Pelosi had personally offended her.
When I win the big money tonight or tomorrow, having new glasses for everyday of the year will happen.
I presume you’re talking about tonight’s Mega-Millions draw. I’m just letting you know that I called dibs, so unless you’ve got a ticket for Wednesday’s Super Lotto, you’ll need to get in line.
Look, this is, what, the third or fourth time you’ve dropped this depth-turd into a discussion?
Wait, you’re maturing; this time is better. The other times you said that old people should just die. That way they’ll stop draining money from the economy (that you could be getting instead, I presume).
Y’know, if you suddenly lost your job, then you’d be a drain on the economy. Are you willing to put an end to that before you get a Social Security check?
My cat just puked on my favorite rug. Actually, looking at it, its a hairball. I’m mostly posting this to not do that stupid time out thing because my last submission was rather rude.
Yesterday, the A/C man came out, and had a look. Found a burned-out circuit board, literally, in the outside part of the split system. He said he’d order a new board, should come in from Sydney or Melbourne in a day or two. In the meantime, the change is coming through - no rain, probably, but lots of wind. It’ll cool down for some days.
Hubs stepped off our wheelchair ramp wrong, fell and cracked a rib. While I am really sad that he is hurting so much, my brain wants to snicker every time I think about him hurting himself on a wheelchair ramp.
So far I won 20 dollars. That might be enough for Groucho glasses for when I win tonight.
One month ago I ordered a jacket online. It was supposed to be here on December 30. Then that was revised to January 8. You will notice it is now January 13. According to tracking the jacket hung out in Jamaica NY for two weeks before going to Queens NY. It departed Queens quickly and went to Greenville SC on January 5. It’s been hanging out in SC until today when it left for “the next facility” which I’m guessing is going to be in Tennessee or some place that isn’t where I am. I am, for the record, in western North Carolina, an hour or so north of Greenville SC. I could have walked to Greenville and gotten the jacket quicker than USPS is moving.
