2020 POTUS Debate 1 (29 September) follow-along and discussion thread

That’s great news.

Clearly Trump is trying to scare them. Glad it seems to be failing:

You may be pleased to know that at an event they held last weekend near Portland where their presumed leader boasted that up to 20,000 would attend, only 500 showed up.

Weather was nice, too.

Suburban women are afraid that inner-city riots will find them in the suburbs.
[/quote] Why do you say this?

I do not believe men and women to be as different as you seem to think they are.

Isn’t telling those bigoted assholes to “stand down and stand by” an admission that he controls them?

Because that is what Trump is trying to do. It seems it is not working but that seems to be a part of their strategy:

Seriously. I am a suburban woman surrounded by suburban women. The vast majority of them think Trump is a creep. And a large number have participated in BLM marches and demonstrations. They see through the Trump bullshit.

Wait, what?

Great.

They didn’t in 2016 but hopefully they do this time.

I’m watching a discussion on one of my right-leaning friends’ Facebook page with other republicans who are mad Trump didn’t let Biden talk more because Biden totally woulda hung himself with his own words. They also thing Biden did nothing but “spew lies”. Huh.

To my earlier point above. I think Biden did a helluva job. His strategy was simple: Disrespect the ever-loving shit out of Donald Trump, and at that, he succeeded beautifully.

Biden knew what Twitter didn’t- that any debate was going to be a shitshow. So Biden just egged the Chief Shitter on.

Yeah, Hillary was better on policy. Yeah, she had some barbs. But you just saw a debate where the challenger openly called the sitting President a clown, a racist, the worst President in history, Putin’s puppy, told him to shut up, more… and this was quite deliberate on the Biden’s team.

Imagine being in the White House, knowing what’s coming. A humiliated, furious Trump, a man reduced… by Joe Biden(!)… to raging about waste baskets on live TV at the end of this… he is going to make their lives a living hell. He is going to make bad decisions based on his emotions. He is going to tweet. He will blame. He will punish. He will yell.

Again, Biden understood what we still don’t want to admit to ourselves: any debate with Donald Trump in his current condition will be a shitshow. So Biden helped Trump do what Trump was going to do anyway - anger. But instead of effective performative anger, ala 2016, Trump was truly angry, and not in a beneficial way.

I don’t think Hillary could have got away with calling Trump a clown and racist to his face. But Joe will probably get applause for it.

When the topic was climate change Trump said we’re doing a lot of great things. There’s the “Billion Tree Project” and it’s great. I don’t have the exact quote but I can look for it in transcripts tomorrow.

Anyway, this is all I can find about any billion tree project, a Pakistani project called the Billion Tree Tsunami.

CNN talked to a handful of undecided voters in Westerville OH after the debates and they all seem very very disappointed in Biden for having called Trump a clown.

I can’t roll my eyes enough for this.

Trump is motivating his base to go vote and/or cause chaos during the election. He is not trying to win new voters.

In that he did well.

Biden held the line. He didn’t win or lose voters. Probably didn’t inspire more to go vote but probably didn’t make anyone want to stay home either.

Even if she did, it wouldn’t have been as bold as what Biden did. Biden called the President all those things. And nobody is going to fault him for disrespecting the office. Trump has already done that.

I know what it is*, since I am Pakistani, I was asking what did Trump say about it? Debate was early in the morning here and I had no desire to watch.

*Or was. It’s a completed project. Now there is the ten billion tree project.

On the other hand, Republican-friendly Frank Luntz’s group…

Let us all not forget that if this were a shitshow, it was solely the fault of a single person.

Ironically, I think a lot of it is based on that very same old fashioned sense of bipartisanship that Whac-a-mole was complaining about being applied by Biden.
