Steinman died Monday in Connecticut, according to the state’s medical examiner. The cause of death is unclear. We do know it appears it was sudden … there was a medical emergency call to his home around 3:30 AM Sunday to transport a male patient.
Had this guy ONLY written ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ he would be a giant. Just a true master of the 1980s power ballad.

It’s striking that McKeown was only 65, given that he was a superstar some 50 years ago.
More like 45 years ago: their breakthrough hit in the U.S., according to Wikipedia’s discography of the band, was “Saturday Night” in early 1976. They’d had a couple years of stardom in the UK, but limited fame elsewhere (and none in the U.S.) before then. McKeown would have been 20 at the time; he joined the band right around his 18th birthday.
While stardom at such a young age was getting less common by the mid-1970s, it hadn’t been all that unusual not long before. George Harrison was 20 when “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” hit #1 in the U.S. Peter Noone, aka Herman of the Hermits, was 16 when “I’m Into Something Good” was on the UK and US charts, and the group’s career was all but over by the time Noone was 20.
Oh gåd almighty, the pedantry here. “Some 50 years ago” implied that it’s not precisely 50 years ago. MCKeown joined BCR in 1973, or 48 years ago. Almost immediately, he scored a hit with the band, almost 50 years ago.
Let’s also mull over the Murica-centric “here in the U.S.” bit. BCR were HUGE in Europe, not just in the UK, but in Central Europe and especially Scandinavia too. I gather your info comes from Wikipedia, which gives the false impression that they were big only in the U.K. before the later 70’s. 1976 is pathetically late if you are talking about the beginning of the BCR craze over here.
