2022 SDMB Celebrity Death Pool

Radio personality Bernard McGuirk has died at 64

Lenny Lipton, poet has died at 82. He is most famous for Puff, the Magic Dragon.

72? Another article said she was 65.

Was doing a wellness check on my list tonight, and discovered I earned some points:

Lars Vogt, died Sept 5, age 51

She very actively tried to conceal her age. 72 appears to be correct.

In the article from NBC there is a quote from her publicist.

“Tenuta had claimed her birthdate as Nov. 7, 1965, but she was born in 1949, Neal said. “She was old school so she would never tell her real age, but now that she’s gone we can tell her real age,” he added.”

Damn. I knew him professionally, met him on several occasions, and provided comments and corrections for one chapter of the massive book on cinema he published last year.

He was an amazing guy who had three major accomplishments in his life, each of which was very successful and financially rewarding:

  • 1963: he wrote the poem that became Puff the Magic Dragon.

  • 1972: he wrote Independent Film Making, a book that became a standard text for many college courses. He followed it with two other books on filmmaking. (He autographed a first edition of one of them for me.)

  • 1989: after decades of research into stereography, he patented the Z-screen technology that became the basis for RealD, the first commercially successful 3D system for digital cinema.

Last year he published The Cinema in Flux: The Evolution of Motion Picture Technology from the Magic Lantern to the Digital Era, an 800-page book examining virtually every aspect of moving images.

As I said, an amazing guy.

A good reminder for everyone to check their lists: 49 Points, a Unique Pick, and a jump up to 2nd place:

Well, I don’t care how old she was, she was a funny lady and I am sorry she is gone.

All my picks are stubbornly clinging to life, the inconsiderate bastards.

Don’t give up hope. I once won the Final Hours Award when one of my picks was assasinated on Dec. 27th.

If you don’t care about the age of people when they die I have some bad news for you about this thread…

Well, since I haven’t had any of my picks die for over a year I guess there is no point in caring about age. I think I will start charging people to be put on my list so they can live forever.

WWE wrestler Sara Lee has died at the age of 30. No cause of death has been reported.

Only 30? I’m sure I remember seeing her line of pastries in the supermarket longer ago than that.

Nobody didn’t like Sara Lee.

She dies at 30 and I had Paul Wight on the list for years. Big man, could not be healthy for his heart. Still alive at 50.

I quit putting him on the list. He is apparently known as “Big Show” if you are curious.
