Denny Laine. This is the first time a Death Pool contestant is someone I actually met.
He played in this little pub in Old Orchard Beach, ME, performing The Beatles Rubber Soul in it’s entirety (or maybe Revolver, I can’t remember). It was my 50th birthday. Denny and his band were playing there because the owner used to roadie for Paul McCartney and coincidentally was also an ex-student of my bandmate, so we had an in.
I shared a word and a sip of a pint with him at the bar and I told him what a great set he had. He told me, and I quote, “Thanks, mate.” What a guy.
Holly Maguigan, defense attorney who helped change the status quo for abused spouses so that self-defense killings were treated as legitimate self-defense instead of murder.
Shoot! I heard him on the radio a few years ago and he was terrific. Of all people who are older, he had the only advice I’ve ever taken to heart.
He said he has always said, “OK, next!” about everything in life. Huge hit show??? Be thankful, celebrate, then think “What’s next?”
Lose a loved one? Mourn, cry, hug, grieve. Then think, “OK. Next…”
That idea of “OK, next” helped him through all the downs and ups. I try to use it, too. i’m sure he said it better. It was on Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell me.
