2023 SDMB Celebrity Death Pool

I thought the weather seemed nice today. Might have even heard some bells ring.

Agreed - his runs on Spectacular Spider-man and Incredible Hulk were some of the best reading. I also enjoyed his novel Artful about The Artful Dodger.

I had him is some previous pools. Glad I could help others out by dropping him.

More sad news. My desired vanity plate was taken. This really makes Newman’s death hurt, man.

James Watt, Reagan’s secretary of the Interior, Beach Boys hater, and the man who described a commission as having “a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple” died today, worth 15 points.

James Watt always makes me think of this Johnny Carson sketch.

I’m so glad you said this. Also my only real memory reference of him.

I remember Watt saying we didn’t need to protect this planet because the Rapture was coming any time now.

That was forty years ago.

Falwell Sr. peddled that same bullshit too.

Terry McDermott has died at age 82. Gold Medalist speed skater for the US in 1964, winning the only Gold Medal for the US at that Olympics.

Also, he was the other guest on the Ed Sullivan show the night the Beatles debuted on US TV.

I believe there were several other guests that appeared on the show the day the Beatles debuted, including Frank Gorshin and the Broadway cast of “Oliver!”.

If I’m not mistaken, McDermott was in the audience; Sullivan called him out and he stood and took a bow to the applause.

mmm

The Oliver cast included Artful Dodger (and future Monkee) Davy Jones.

Or the Bloom County strip with “A black, a woman, two dips, and a cripple.” I can’t link it but Google image search will take you there.

I am a little surprised that he was not picked, I thought I remembered his name. But there are several other Terry’s

His 'child" Angies List grew up, disappointed its parent and died before he did.
The commercial bastard it became is a disapointment to all.

I was a speedskater as a youngster. Terry came to the meet in Midland in 1965 and brought his medal. He let us kids take turns holding it. Yes, I took a turn.

He also won a silver medal at the 1968 Olympics, both in the 500 meter event.

Very cool. Closest I have is that Frank Tanana used to come to my school all the time because his kids played against us in sports. He was a newly retired Detroit Tiger at the time.

One of Tanana’s best friends from HS, and was on the HS baseball team with him, lived in the same dorm as me and my friends. We heard several stories about their exploits in HS but as that was a long long time ago, I don’t recall them.
