Something related to CTE is my first thought, whenever a football player dies young.

CTE is primarily a lineman’s problem. Running backs are vulnerable to it as well. QBs, slightly less. But a cornerback plays mostly out in the defensive backfield and tends to have less exposure to potential head injuries.

I’m not knowledgeable enough to have a well-founded opinion, so this is just idle speculation; but while cornerbacks aren’t down in the trenches slamming into tackles and defensive ends, they are out running at top speed to take down fleet-footed wide receivers. On those occasions that they do butt heads with a wideout, the momentum has to add some extra force, no?

Awww. Me and my kids did enjoy those books.

That’s pretty unlikely. Van Dyke is 98. Larry Matthews is 68, Adrian Hall is 65, and Heather Ripley is 64.

(Minor hijack) This is not 100% accurate, as RB, LB, and DBs are increasingly represented in the samples of professional athletes with CTE. While these are not the most recent numbers (pulling directly from this 2013 article:)

Positions played by National Football League players positive for CTE included offensive linemen (26%), running backs (20%), defensive linemen (14%), linebackers (14%), quarterbacks (6%), defensive backs (6%), tight ends (6%) and wide receivers (6%).

…the same trends are listed in a more recent 2017 article

Characteristics Mild CTE (n = 44) Severe CTE (n = 133) Total (n = 177)
Offensive lineman 8% (18) 29% (22) 37% (21)
Defensive lineman 8% (18) 27% (20) 35% (20)
Running back 4% (9) 27% (20) 31% (18)
Linebacker 12% (27) 14% (11) 26% (15)
Defensive back 4% (9) 18% (14) 22% (12)
Quarterback 2% (5) 11% (8) 13% (7)
