Didn’t realize the Blazers had an Israeli player. Very cool. I wonder who the greatest Jewish NBA player ever was. I suspect “one-time All-Star” puts this guy squarely in the running, assuming he is in fact Jewish.
Going into the game, I feel excited about the new format.
Nope, turns out Dolph Schayes (12 time all-NBA, one ring) was a Jew. Also, may the memory of Max Zaslovski be for a blessing. And apparently Amar’e Stoudamire converted and played in Israel, but that was after his NBA career. So, Deni Alveji (sp?) of the Blazers seems to be in second or third place, depending on whether you take stats from the 1940s seriously.
Also, apparently Domantis Sabonas is in the process of converting! Other notable Jews in hoops include Sue Bird, Nancy Lieberman and Red Auerbach. Auerbach wasn’t a player, but is clearly a more important figure in NBA history than even Schayes.
The arena horn blared for 13 straight minutes in the middle of last night’s Pistons/Cavs game, because of a power surge to the main scoreboard. The arena staff eventually shut down power to the scoreboard and resumed play using a manual air horn.
In the Thunder win over the Nuggets last night, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 35 points, 15 assists, and no turnovers. Only LeBron James has ever achieved such a stat line before.
SGA has also now tied Wilt Chamberlain’s regular-season record for consecutive 20-point games. During the streak, he’s been averaging 25.6 points in the first three quarters.
Jayson Tatum returned to action for the Celtics on Friday night, finishing with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists in 27 minutes against the Mavericks. He got 20 points, three rebounds, and two assists in 27 minutes against Cleveland. Both were wins. The Celtics are going to be tough to beat this year.
The Hornets were down 43-24 in the second quarter in Portland, but limited the Trail Blazers to only 19 points in the fourth to win, 103-101, and return to .500.
Pacers lost by five in Sacramento; Celtics lost by nine in San Antonio.
Bam Adebayo?! BAM ADEBAYO?! He’s good but I wouldn’t even put him in the Hall of Fame!
He set new NBA records for free throws made (36) and free throws attempted (43) in a game. By halftime he already had 43 points, eclipsing his career high by two.
The last 5 minutes of that game was ridiculous. Leading by 30, the Heat would immediately foul the Wizards to stop the clock and get the ball back in Adebayo’s hands, then he’d run the length of the floor and just throw the ball, hoping for a foul. In those 5 minutes, he was 1-5 from the field and 7-7 at the line until he was removed with a minute left, after he got his 83rd.
Yes, but to be fair (according to The Athletic’s Bounce e-mail newsletter):
The Warriors were fouling to get the ball back for Wilt Chamberlain to get to 100 points.
Kobe was still in the game up 15 with less than two minutes left, being fed the ball to keep scoring in a decided game. Including two free throws up 19 with 43 seconds left.
You don’t get to 80 points without someone greasing the wheels for you.
