2025-26 Ski and Snowboard thread - It's all downhill from here

And November started so promisingly, too!

Looks like we’ll hit Waterville Valley up in NH this weekend to get our first day on snow. Then next weekend we have a party Saturday evening so we’ll do something closer for just a 4 hour day. Since the days are free (thank you Indy Pass) I don’t feel guilty about skiing a partial day.

Hope cross-country is allowed – did my first ski of the season at a nearby state park. Pretty good conditions, saw 4 other skiers (one when I arrived and 3 when I was leaving). I think this equals what I did last year (it was very bad for snow). I think I will try tomorrow – not sure where.

The Wasatch has a decent storm arriving tonight and going through the weekend , should be 20 inches of fairly dense base building snow , so that’s good. We will likely get up the hill for some cold wet, rock shot , skiing on Saturday, but better than not skiing . Let’s see how my alternative fitness regime of sitting in front of PowerPoint slides all autumn works out.

My home hill opens tomorrow on mostly man-made snow, with probably one lift running. Be still, my beating heart.

Well day one wasn’t great , wife’s boots were really causing a lot of pain on the shins, and they are pretty ancient . So an early stop and off down to Cole Sports and a new set of Salomon’s with the boa clamps, custom foot beds and heat molded liners later , and we will see how that goes next weekend.

Lindsey freakin’ Vonn!

Wow.

The commentary went from talking about her past legacy etc when she was behind the clock, then after that fast section rapidly went to “holy crap she is going to win! “ levels , very cool to see.

Meanwhile back in the Wasatch, I think I am going to go and get my mountain bike back out. Too warm to even make snow.

I hope all y’all in the east are enjoying things .

She and Michaela are in the running for the GOAT. Coming back after that many injuries is insane. I can’t even imagine the mental fortitude.

Bridger was great coverage, but horrific conditions. Super grabby, couldn’t see the edge between groomed and un. Signs and ski patrol telling everyone–”skiing on groomed runs is HIGHLY recommended!” 6 runs in slop and I’m tired and my hip flexors are pissed!

That was impressive. I don’t watch competitive skiing - is a 1+ second margin of victory considered a lot?

Yes, that is huge. She ran away with that race.

In today’s race she got 2nd, two podiums in 2 days.

OK, first day of the season for me. My wife passed on heading north today because her shoulder tendonitis flared up so I was solo. Late start and lots of accidents on I-93 due to some icy conditions so I took my time. Booted up in the parking lot, redeemed my Indy Pass and was on snow by 10:30. Conditions were OK, I remembered how to ski, my plantar fascitis only bothered me walking to the mountain from the car. Skied for 2.5 hours at Pat’s Peak, unfortunately my two favorite runs (FIS and Twister) were closed for snowmaking and race training.

So, nothing special for day 1, but no car accidents, legs worked fine, and new bibs felt comfortable. If my wife had joined me I probably would have skied longer.

And here in the Sierra, I haven’t even considered putting the snow tires on.
