2025 college football season thread

Hoosiers improved to 11-0 with a drubbing of Wisconsin in our seniors’ last home game. No taking it easy after our close victory over Penn State last week.

Next week is a bye, and then we go to West Lafayette for the Old Oaken Bucket game against Purdue to close the regular season.

Ohio State has Rutgers and then Michigan.

For a delightful change, Alabama made all the crucial mistakes at the end of the game and lost to Oklahoma for the second consecutive year. I kept expecting that Simpson kid to hit yet another third and long to pull them out of the fire but he short armed some key throws and the Sooners blanketed the receivers and got the final stop. Very satisfying.

Texas trooper doing a Texas thing, but he won’t do it again.

Really? like last year? when Bama was 9-3 and were not in the playoffs?

OK, Kiffin is leaving for supposedly greener pastures before his team gets to compete in the CFP.

Next!

I get it. Coaches have no loyality to their contracts/schools teams. Have a bad season, the reverse is also true, “off with his head”. Recent examples are Franklin at PSU and Kelley at LSU. I long for (wildly imagine) when these fine institutions focused on education. (Steve, you ignorant clod, that has never been the case).

Notre Dame is hosting Syracuse today. On the second play of the game, Dame intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD. After a 3-and-out, Dame returned the punt for a TD. On the ensuing drive, Dame picked off another pass and returned for a touchdown. Then after another punt, ND had a 2-play, 59 yard drive for a TD. After yet another punt, Dame had a 3-play, 69 yard drive for another touchdown. The score was 35-0 after the first quarter.

Right then I logged into DraftKings to look at the betting lines. Dame was, at that moment, a 69.5 point favorite, which is the largest point spread I’ve ever seen.

Right now they are beating that (by half a point), amazingly.

And Syracuse scores with 7 seconds to play to cover +69.5, losing only by 63.

Way to Go, Army! Game in the bag, so let’s throw a pic and snatch defeat from the jaws of Victory.

God, that was awful!

Longhorns looking good, leading Aggies 20-10.

It’s over! No more undefeated season for the Aggies .

Now the question comes up of whether or not the Longhorns should sneak into the playoffs. Despite this win, I think they don’t have a case, mostly due to the ugly loss to Florida. Apparently the UT coach, Steve Sarkisian, thinks that it’s the loss to Ohio State that will keep Texas out. During the game the announcers were reporting that his strategy for avoiding that scenario in the future will be to only schedule weak teams for the out of conference games. I disagree, since that loss to OSU isn’t what’s going to keep Texas out of the playoffs, it’s that loss to Florida that will make the difference.

ETA. In other words, if Texas had played a cupcake game instead of OSU in week 1, and had only two losses right now instead of three, they would probably still be on the outside looking in.

I agree that the Florida loss stunk much worse, but it was still foolhardy for Texas to schedule an opponent as strong as Ohio State when it didn’t have to. There was little to gain but much to lose in doing so.

Maybe. In my scenario where they beat up on a cupcake but still lose to Georgia and Florida, they are probably out. But if they had beat Ohio State and still lost to Georgia and Florida, that hypothetical two loss Texas team would probably be in.

Indiana beat the living hell out of Purdue to win the Old Oaken Bucket game for the second year in a row, and finished the regular season undefeated.

They’re on to the Big Ten Championship Game, next week at 8 p.m. on FOX.

Ohio State clinches with a win over Michigan.

Oregon clinches with a win over Washington AND an Ohio State loss to Michigan.

Michigan clinches with a win over Ohio State AND an Oregon loss.

Michigan fan here:

Congratulations, Ohio State fans. You have a much better team that Michigan this year.

That’s not always enough, though. First quarter had me worried.

Season is done, as far as I’m concerned. Yeah, we’ll have to play Indiana for an exciting Big10 championship, and at least one playoff game, but an undefeated season ending with a victory over Michigan is all this Buckeye needs.

SC v UCLA

So pretty to watch! Both teams in home uniforms. All games should be like this, when possible. Our New Fancy TV’s demand it!

Once again, my Spartans are shopping for a coach. Jonathan Smith may be a nice guy, but you gotta win more than one Big Ten game in a year and you’ve got to be able to recruit in our neck of the woods.

To the surprise of absolutely no one, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is bailing, effective immediately, to take the LSU job. Ole Miss immediately promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to the head position; Golding will be coaching the team through the upcoming playoffs.

I find Kiffin to be a pretty awful human being, but he wins games, so he gets jobs.
