There will be a second round. All of the Dems will vote
Three against now. Self voted for Donalds
The vote has not been finalized. Self and Norman just switched to Johnson. He wins
Kept the tally open long enough for two to change their votes. Norman also changed.
I don’t understand why the members of congress can’t just find a judge to swear them all in. If taking an oath before a magistrate (his father) was good enough for Coolidge then it should be good enough for members of congress. Violates House rules? What rules? There are none until the new congress adopts them.
It’s not the Rules, it’s a statute.
2 USC §25. Oath of Speaker, Members, and Delegates
At the first session of Congress after every general election of Representatives, the oath of office shall be administered by any Member of the House of Representatives to the Speaker; and by the Speaker to all the Members and Delegates present, and to the Clerk, previous to entering on any other business; and to the Members and Delegates who afterward appear, previous to their taking their seats.
And the fecking felon get his way again
How foolish of me to think anyone would actually show some spine.
What would showing spine look like to you?
The revolt came from idiot hardline conservatives who were mad at Mike Johnson for working with democrats during a congressional term when they would have had to work with democrats outside of their chamber anyway. It would have been a moronic hill to die on and if anything its surprising that they put up any fight at all.
On the other hand, if there is still a rift, the dems should continue to exploit it to block the worst of the gop agenda and/or get their own agenda inserted into legislation that a united gop would have been able to cut them out on.
A tragicomedy in three acts:
I thought it would take a whole day before they settled- well, my prediction was wrong.
This should last until the next time Moses Mike remembers that he doesn’t have a 60-seat majority and he needs Democrat votes to avoid the next shutdown, at which point the burn-it-all-down caucus will declare him a traitor.
Oh man, I was sure that this time Republican “moderates” were finally going to reach across the aisle to demand a bipartisan Speaker and a consensus approach to governing the House! Fool me three times, shame on you. . .
Do they still have the rule that it takes only one objector to put the speakership in question?
The new rules package prohibits the Speaker from suspending regular order between Thursday and Sunday - meaning that when the CR expires on Friday March 14th and the House has done nothing about it until the last minute like always, Moses Mike will be unable to pass a bill to fund the government without getting it through committee.
Is it too early to start the “Government Shutdown Watch March 2025 Edition” thread?
Johnson had success there. Now it will take nine:
Ok I’ll say it. Mike Johnson is better at this than Kevin McCartney. Johnson is a deal cutter; McCartney was a weasel. The M-T-W rule looks manageable though it makes last minute deal cutting more difficult and may result in the occasional blow-up. I’m not surprised that the GOP arsonists are holding back a little. Indeed, it’s bizarre that they’re still trying to trip up the deal cutters, given that the GOP has trifecta control.
Not sure what Massie’s deal is. Kentucky-4 is a safe district, R+19. Massie was first elected for the 2012 term. I see he has voted against a lot of GOP leaders:
Despite being a member of the Republican Party, Massie has frequently voted against his party’s nominee for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. In 2013, Massie voted instead for Justin Amash;[202] in January 2015, Massie voted for Ted Yoho;[203] in October 2015 and 2017, Massie voted for Dan Webster;[204][205] in 2019, Massie voted for Jim Jordan.[206] Massie has also received votes for Speaker in 2019 and October 2023.[206][207]
Massie has generally won the Republican primaries with over 70% of the vote.
Johnson is so good at it, it’s like McCartney never even was Speaker!
So on the whole The Hill would prefer if American democracy and governance was only required on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday?
More time to campaign and grift.
