Don’t know why I’m just seeing this, but shit, that means I was only 15 years older than she was, so I was 32 when it happened. Wow.
No wonder there’s a “So near and yet so far” feeling about it, and why I was so creeped out when it happened. I worked at a high school in 1999. I’d forgotten that part. I’d also forgotten that it happened before 9/11.
The sound the J makes is kind of an unusual sound. English is a weird language on the whole.
I teach Hebrew in religious school, and when I teach the kids things about Hebrew that make them react with a “how bizarre!” I list lots of other languages that have the same feature (like gendered words), and let them know that English is actually the oddball for NOT having the feature.
English has a lot of sounds that are uncommon in world languages, too: R, W, TH and the flat, short A in hat, cat and bat are all very uncommon, along with the J sound. This is why not being able to say them correctly is a feature of quite a few foreign accents, and they are also, unsurprisingly, common sounds to be the focus of speech therapy. Albeit, S is too, and S is common.
My mother was a linguist, and I used to read her books for fun when I was a kid.
I think I see and error on my score, I believe it should read 64 3 1.

Ironically, I’ve long been an admirer of Lou Gerstner, the man who practically single-handedly turned around IBM when it was in a death spiral. When he was appointed as IBM’s CEO, there were titters of ridicule that a “breakfast cereal guy” was being brought in to save this iconic tech company (Gerstner had been the CEO of RJR Nabisco). But it was his business insights and management skills that allowed him to be successful, not knowledge of computer technology.
Thank you for the notification, though it’s sad news. There are very, very few people like Gerstner in the world. The tribute to him from the CEO of IBM was gracious and spot-on regarding what he accomplished there, which was truly remarkable.
