Roy Ayers, the vibraphonist, composer and jazz-funk pioneer behind “Everybody Loves the Sunshine,” has died at the age of 84.

MSNBC had an update on Gene Hackman and his wife. Long story short, it looks like Betsy died of Hanta virus somewhere around the 11th, and Gene died of heart diseases, exacerbated by advanced Alzheimer disease. So, the guess is that Betsy died first and then Gene hung on as long as he could in his state and the dog was collateral damage - the dog had just had a some procedure done so was most likely stuck in the crate for as long as it too for people to find them.

TL;DR - Hanta virus for Betsy and then Gene faded away.

And hantavirus is most commonly transmitted by rodents, generally via humans inhaling droppings.

Which raises all sorts of questions about their situation and how it seems she was his only caretaker, and she wasn’t exactly young herself. It’s likely she ended up overwhelmed by everything she had to do and didn’t really have the time or ability to maintain their living quarters.

The whole thing is just layers of tragedy. How did they end up essentially alone in their final days?

60s is the new 40s and she was very fit - had Gene riding bicycle when he was 97. There would be no reason to have daily help. Just bad luck for her.

They weren’t “alone” as you are implying but were regularly out in the community and active.
