James Harrison, the champion blood donor from Australia, has died. He is credited with saving the lives of over two million babies by his blood donations. It was found that his blood had a combination of factors that allowed doctors to develop a medicine that saved Rh babies, his own grandchild included. He had to stop donating when he was 81, as that is the limit age for Australia. His last donation was on national television. Between 18 and 81, and between plasma, platelets and whole blood, he donated over 1100 times. He said he was afraid of needles and so he never saw the needle. A national treasure. I’m a regular platelet donor myself. I don’t know if my blood is quite as good as James Harrison’s, but they can get three units out of me every couple weeks, along with the occasional unit of plasma. My record isn’t quite as good as his - only 2.3995 million or so to go.
And hey, if you’re reading - consider becoming a donor yourself! If you’ve been deferred before, try again - criteria changed recently and it might be possible for you now.
Not a fan of her politics but I still wish her a strong recovery or, failing that, a peaceful passing. Not a great way to go.
For some reason, if you’ve had cancer ever the UK doesn’t let you donate blood. I’ve asked. Alas.
It’s also true if you’ve ever had Hepatitis C you can’t be a donor. I got cured a few years ago, but apparently just because it’s undetectable, it’s still there. It makes me sad that I can’t give blood.

Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner (TX-18) died this morning, age 70. He fell ill yesterday at the Cannon House Office Building complex, received medical treatment, went to the presidential address to Congress last night, but then was admitted to the hospital and died this morning.
Damn. Seems like he was one of the good guys, although the paragraph on homelessness is a little puzzling.
