I am getting married next Saturday and we are having a 1920s Jazz wedding (actually my fiancé recently posted about a short film to show before the ceremony).
I have yet to settle on something to “walk down the aisle” to. I would like something slow, yet upbeat and obviously from the late 20s early 30s in the hot jazz style.
Any ideas?
You say “march.” Does it have to be march tempo?
Oh no, not at all. I mean, it should be easy to walk to, not too fast, not too slow… but it doesn’t have to be a march beat.
Track 32 on this album is probably exactly what you’re looking for (it’s fizzy and charming), except at less than a minute, probably too too short.
I did find this on YouTube, though.
That’s for your recessional!
For the entrance, I don’t know how slow is “slow.” But you can walk as slow as you want to a faster tempo. The first song that crossed my mind, I swear, was Struttin with Some Barbecue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxGruxZVavM (And let me tell you, that isn’t referring to cooked meat.) That would make an awesome recessional, I think.
Depending on how hot and slinky you want to go, there’s The Mooche by Duke Ellington. Definitely could be a march. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDVZdZMCc0w
ETA: Georgia Cake Walk by Art Hodes & His Chicagoans?
Damn, you beat me to it…exactly what I was going to suggest!
Interesting assignment. I assume you don’t want a medium-paced piece - you don’t want to race down the aisle.
Here are some ideas from the Red Hot Jazz Archive. The sound quality here isn’t very good, but it’s a good place to listen to a lot of music from that era. If you decide you like something you can buy it someplace else (the quality of a CD reissue will be a lot better). Each page lists a bunch of different recordings, so I can’t post links to each one - I’ll give links to the pages and name the recordings I think are appropriate. BTW, I assume it’s OK to list things from the very early thirties (I’ll give the year of each recording).
Duke Ellington’s Cotton Club Orchestra:
Cotton Club Stomp (1929)
Doin’ the Voom Voom (1929)
Hot Feet (1929)
The Jungle Band (an Ellington pseudonym):
Rent Party Blues (1929)
Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra
She’s No Trouble (1928)
Moten Swing (1932)
New Moten Stomp (1930)
Fletcher Henderson’s Orchestra
Business in F (1931)
Joe Venuti’s Blue Four
A Mug of Ale
Luis Russell and His Orchestra
Feelin’ the Spirit (1929)
I’ll post more as I think of them.
