The problem I have with people who are like “yeah, I know VCO3 is an asshole, but he’s just so damn amusing! And he’s edgy and stuff, too” is they are basically buying into a lie.
The problem is, all he is a troll who has built an entirely manufactured persona for the pure purpose of trolling.
Do I think his posting persona is some reflection of the real him? Definitely, it’s impossible to totally separate any character from the real person inside. I think he is someone who would do well with a LiveJournal or a blog to rant into, he’s someone who gets pissy too easily.
I also very, very seriously doubt he gets nearly as mad as he acts here. It’s an act. If this was the genuine him, I’d feel sorry for him and probably be amused by him at the same time (in a guilty way since it would be akin to laughing at the disabled.) But no, this “mega-rage” bullshit is clearly manufactured to piss people off, these aren’t his real emotions. A long time ago when he first started posting, I think that was closer to his genuine self. His style was subtly different then, he still ranted and raved, but this is just over the top now. Over time he has come to realize just what pisses off the forum and he has magnified those characteristics of himself dramatically to further his career as a troll.
I’d say he is working with the deliberate angle of eventually being banned, but ideally he will get away with this behavior for months or even longer before it finally happens, getting attention and flames that he desires so much along the way. It is my sincere hope that the SDBM staff recognize this pattern and ban him.
I don’t like some of the witch hunts that go down on unpopular posters. I’m a pretty unpopular poster. A lot of what I say offends or pisses people here off, but that is not my intentions with any of my posts. I’m all about the free exchange of ideas no matter how unpopular those ideas happen to be. But I think they should be genuine ideas, not just manufactured rhetoric designed with the sole intent of pissing other posters off.
As much as I bash the membership of these forums, I actually enjoy posting here, and I think the true trolls hurt this place as a whole. They’re just like class clowns. Some people think they are oh so funny but you know what, all they really do is disrupt the good students who are actually trying to learn. I know this isn’t a class room, but it’s not a totally unstructured, anything-goes environment either. We have rules and moderators for a reason, primarily to deal with people like VCO3 in my opinion.
I post on a lot of message boards, some with stricter rules than here and some with no moderation staff and no rules at all. They all offer different flavors of discussion, the unmoderated forums aren’t bad. But there is a certain environment that effective moderating can provide and that is done pretty well here, VCO3 is just a huge disruption that makes the entire message board look foolish with all the attention he gets.
