25 things which make it hard for me to believe in God

Do you realize this mirrors your own thinking?

Each human thinks it’s own thoughts, has it’s own beliefs. I do not think name calling is an answer, but no one will ever have an answer to solve the riddle of religious belief as it is a personal thing with each human.

All writings, knowledge, and thoughts, are human, so a person can think, write and say as they wish, There is no difference in what a person said 4,000 years or more ago than what one says now. Many writings were destroyed and so one is left to ponder what was said to be factual. One believes what he wants to be true.

I didn’t propose to solve the riddles of religion. I posted a simple link showing, with evidence, that consciousness survives the death of the brain and body. Nothing really new, research has been going on for over 30 years. Mostly what I get back are insults. Show counter evidence and have a real debate.

Why would lack of understanding the items in your list lead you to decide there is no God? To be an atheist? Finding standard Christianity … odd? Just because standard Christian verbage is confusing, at best?

I found some comfort being agnostic a while back, until the dust settled. I knew something was going on, concerning God, and I took the attitude that I don’t know what is going on.

agnostic –noun

  1. a person who holds that the existence of the ultimate cause, as God, and the essential nature of things are unknown and unknowable, or that human knowledge is limited to experience.
  2. a person who denies or doubts the possibility of ultimate knowledge in some area of study.

This instantly made every Christian I knew an agnostic, since they kept telling me “Only God knows”, or some such ditty.

To make the long story short, it was some time later the analogy of “Prison Planet” arose. I haven’t seen a better one. Not sure that gives me any comfort.

You are the one making the claims, lekatt. You have not only stated as a fact that spirits exist, but have discussed their characteristics and behaviors in detail. I can do the same thing with the Easter bunny, describing his behavior, showing dozens of stories, and writing about my own personal experiences dreaming about the Easter bunny. If you say, “wait a minute, Wombat, there’s no such thing as the Easter bunny,” then it’s up to me to demonstrate that there is, using something other than fiction, dreams, and hallucinations–which is all the “evidence” you’ve ever provided for spirits.

I won’t go so far as to say that it’s your research that proves my claim (obviously, I can’t prove a negative), but do you find it telling that not one single link you’ve provided has ever contained actual hard evidence? It’s all hearsay and subjective stories that can’t be reproduced in a lab. Thousands of years and millions of people claiming spirits are real, and not one–not one has ever managed to have a spirit perform these tricks in a verifiable manner in a controlled environment. Doesn’t that tell you something?

Did you actually read that article? I did. There was no evidence there whatsoever. It was just a guy conjecturing with no hard data.

OK, you are brilliant and know much more than I and millions of others. I provided evidence of spirit in many, many of my posts including the last one. The Magic Brain. Now if you are going to say that the surgeon who operated and the patient are just conjecturing there is no hope for a debate. Yes, there is a spirit world, it created this physical world. You will in time find out as all do. I couldn’t live without following studies on things like the brain and other good research. I want to know the truth.

I think what you percieve to be evidence doesn’t prove anything to another. Your experiences cannot be proof to anyone but your self. I do not fault you for your beliefs, but like Kanicbird they are beliefs not proof.

Your beliefs help you, so I see nothing wrong in that. Years ago I had a lot of thing that happened to me that I couldn’t explain but in time I realized it was in my personal being, and not anything out side of my own thinking. When one is troubled the mind helps one to cope.

The evidence I presented is good evidence gathered by accredited degreed men of science. I make no statement other than the evidence is real and good.

I realize no one can prove personal experiences, but because they are personal experiences doesn’t make them false. I have been posting on this board for years about near death experiences and never has there been an intelligent discussion of the contents of one. As soon as the subject is mentioned there is extreme malice toward them and the person posting. The mods are guilty of this as well as the regulars. This has to be the worst moderated board on the Internet. Total bias and prejudice. It is a shame, the name of board.

My subscription is up soon and I will not be renewing, I tried to bring civility and information and got kicked in the ass. Time to go for good.

Split second occurences are recorded all the time with cameras on cell phones…one BILLION people have them now. Cameras are recording some busy streets 24/7.
Planes fly into the world trade center…a split second event…and you’ve got 5 different angles of it happening.
How come with a BILLION cameras out there, aren’t we getting real evidence just POURING in these days? Sure we get people SAYING shit happens…

You say you want to know the truth, but you’re willing to believe every harebrained idea that comes along. Your “scientific” evidence consists of either people who don’t understand scientific theory or “men of science” that change their whole philosophy of life based on a dream or hallucination.

If you wanted the truth, you’d consider everything you read carefully, and look at the credentials of the people making the claims. It’s not just the spirit world, which a lot of people believe in. You believe in astrology and ouija boards, for goodness’ sake! Those are scientifically verifiable, and they’ve failed every test, every time.

I have no malice toward you, lekatt. You frustrate me endlessly, but there’s no malice.

Please do understand that in our interactions, I’m not taking a role as moderator. My forum is the Game Room, and you tend to post in Great Debates. That’s where the problem lies. In General Questions and Great Debates, there is a standard defined. You have to be able to back up what you say. You have to provide “hard” evidence. Given the subject matter, that’s impossible to do. It’s a recipe for frustration for both of us: me because you can’t debate with someone who says, “I had a near death experience once, and here’s what I hallucinated.” Yes, that’s what you hallucinated. I’m sure it is. But that’s all it was.

The experiences aren’t what’s false. It’s that experiencing something and correctly interpreting what it implies about reality are too different things. A spinning room could be the room physically spinning. Or it could be the result of having drank too much gin.

I find that hard to believe. More likely, you couldn’t convince anyone of your claims, and they raised arguments you didn’t agree with.

Loose but fair translation: "I choose to believe in made-up stuff that can’t be supported by good reasoning or good evidence, and in fact I have only the most tenuous grasp of what ‘good reasoning’ actually means. Lots of people around here seem quite good at pointing these things out. When I offer my trite, re-hashed and out-moded specious arguments (which is all I have), it doesn’t work. I am going to sulk about this, get upset and cry ‘foul!’ ".

I wonder what is the difference between ‘bias’ and ‘total bias’.

Good. This place is about fighting ignorance, not spreading it around. Please close the door on your way out.

Helpful note for the future: ‘re-hashed specious pseudo-logic, selective bias, cites that don’t support anything, arguments from personal delusion and wishful thinking’ do not equal ‘information’.

Thank you. Now inform me, directly, how an article on the website called “Thoughtful Living, a study of Near Death Experiences” refutes any or one of the 25 reasons someone can’t believe in god.

Pick the reason, copy, paste it, italicize if you’re feeling saucy, and state,
"The article I posted directly refutes (one of the 25 reasons-- insert here)
beacuse of (insert your reasoning-- not opinion-- why this article refutes the reason).

Would this article on the study (by one person, not a scientist) of NDE refute the existence of Terminally Ill Kids as a reason not to believe in god?

Aaaaaaand, go!

Heh and lol. For those who didn’t click the link:
Judges 1:19 (King James Version)

19And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron. Now to be fair, other translations put it a little differently: Judges 1:19 (New International Version)

19 The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots. Also, I’m guessing that “he” in KJV refers to Judah and not the Lord, since “he” isn’t capitalized. So while the Lord may have been with the men of Judah, it doesn’t follow that the latter would prevail.

Sorry you feel that way,but if people disagreeing with you upsets you then perhaps your beliefs are not as strong as you would like.

I have read a lot of science( I am no wizzard), my son is a Scientist and he says it depends on what one thinks is good science and what is,some scientists want to believe as you do, but there is no proof in any science of an after life. Because a person has an experience doesn’t prove it is anything out side their own mind.

Near death is not death and we still do not know everything about the human brain.

Greetings Weston.

It’s good you are searching for God. I myself have doubted God for every reason you listed. I still doubt God and I’m a Christian so your doubt is normal. I’ll try to answer each point individually.

  1. Sin is such an insult to such a perfect, righteous God that there had to be a sufficient ‘payment’ for our debt (our sins) to be paid off.

  2. If God made the universe smaller, what would be on the outside of this limit of the universe. It would be more existence. It doesn’t really matter whether its made up of stars, or planets or titbits, its still existence.

  3. Dawkins belief about the origin of people is very different from the Christian belief. (most) Christians don’t believe humans are 250 000 years old. We believe that humans are closer to 6000-10 000 years old. God intervened in mans life and made himself known on the first day of mans existence. (Adam and Eve)

  4. Yes, the trinity is a very tough concept to understand. I still don’t quite understand it and i’ve studied it quite a lot. When we think about how great and infinite God is it kind of makes sense that there are things we won’t understand about Him. Also, God created our concept of ‘logic’ and ‘reason’, so since He created these methods, he exists beyond the boundaries of our very finite human intelligence and comprehension.

  5. This is indeed a very sad and unfortunate reality of our existence. The only reason disease and misery exist in the world is because of what happened in the Garden of Eden: Eve and Adam disobeyed God and brought sin into the perfect world God had made. because of this we have disease, mutations and other horrible things. Also, many of these chronic diseases are caused by humans (radiation causes cancer, junk food causes diabetes and heart problems) which can be passed down by the parents. All children who dies are, to my best knowledge, with God in heaven.

  6. You are right: God and the Son of God (Jesus) performed many miracles. Even back then after seeing these miracles first hand, many people did not believe in God and still rejected Him. The Israelites saw miracles and still many rejected God. Even if people saw a miracle, they might believe for a short time because God is literally holding them by the hand and forcing them to believe. Peoples faith would never mature and get stronger if they were handed everything to them. In order to develop ones faith they have to take the ‘training wheels’ off first. The fact that people entire life and heart can be changed by God’s Grace is a miracle in itself and it happens everyday.

  7. Those in Heaven will be with God and will truly see Him beyond what we can on earth. Everything will be clear, we will truly know Gods plan and we will see how righteous and fair He really is.

  8. God is eternal. Sin is so disgusting and awful to God, it is the complete opposite of who He is. Therefore if we sin against Him that sin is held against us forever. Its like on earth: you do the crime, you pay the time. This is where Jesus the saviour comes in. Instead of us paying the debt, Jesus basically said “Don’t worry i’ll go to jail for you, just sign here”. All we have to do is accept his payment on the cross and our debt is paid. we don’y have to pray ten times a day, or eat weird foods or give all our money to charity. We just have to love Jesus as He loves us.

  9. The greatest sin is to deny Gods love and reject Him. It’s not stealing or lying that puts you in hell, if it was then i’m in trouble =O. What puts us in hell is our choice to reject and live apart from God. If we wish to be apart from God in this life, why wouldn’t we also be apart from Him in the next. If we are sinners (which we all are) then God can’t let us into heaven as it wouldn’t be heaven anymore if there was sin there. We have to be cleaned by Jesus Christ first.

  10. My cat is also under the firm belief he is a god himself. Cats, being animals, don’t have the ability to worship anything. As sons and daughters we should honour/respect our parents. God is the Father of all of us so we should honour Him appropriately. He had done infinitely more and loves us infinitely more then any human, even our parents, could ever possibly do. So our honour of Him should match the love and honour he gives us.

  11. Heaven is far beyond our human comprehension. Yes, it seems like it would get boring but when your in Gods presence and your face-to-face with Him it surely won’t be.

  12. Many supposed contradictions can be explained with proper analysis and study of the time period the verse was written , the context and who the verse was to/from.

  13. In Genesis is believe, it says that there are currents within/beneath the oceans and that a mans seed is in his sperm and that the earth is round and suspended in space. How would these primitive people know without the equipment we have today. Not to mention all the prophecies which were foretold and came true hundred of years later.

  14. These ‘experiments’ can be misleading because people can’t measure what God does to peoples hearts. He may not answer prayers immediately. He may set events in motion which we will only see years down the road. Also, there is lots of room for interpretation in these studies. Bias is also very prevalent depending on the person(s) doing the study.

  15. God oversaw the writings of the Gospels. Since they were so important, as they contained the events of Jesus Christ the Saviour, God would want them to be reported accurately.

  16. Creation has not been debunked. Many scientific ‘theories’ that claim to disprove creation are just that: theories. Darwinian Evolution has never been even close to proven, as it can’t be observed using the scientific method. Carbon dating is based on many assumptions which leave room for a lot of error. Many dinosaur fossils aren’t actually fully fossilized or ‘hardened’ yet which supports the belief that dinosaurs didn’t die off 65 million or so years ago.

  17. He knows about the feelings, He knows what they feel like but, being God, He can choose to experience them or not. This goes back to how God is beyond our human comprehension of logic, reason and feelings/emotions.

  18. God does have free will. Humans have free will, in that we can choose to do option A or option B. God knows what option we will choose but we still have that choice. Imagine for s second: If a dad put a candy bar on the table in front his kid and then left the room, what do you think will happen? The dad know the kid will eat the candy bar because he know how his kid and kids in general think. But, it is still the kids choice whether or not to eat the candy bar.

  19. A huge difference is the fact that when Jesus died on the cross, that day changed human history. Hundreds of religions, cults, organizations and churches/mosques/synagogues all base a lot of their doctrine on who Jesus was (and is). No event has impacted humans the way that (awesome yet sad) day did. This is indeed an interesting question, so thanks for bringing it up.

  20. They may not have heard about Him yet, but that doesn’t me an they never will. God has a plan for everyone and that might mean them getting Saved at age 13 or 14 or not till their late 40’s. God put everyone on this earth for a purpose, whether we are saved or not. God does want everyone to be saved and be with Him in heaven. That choice comes down to the individual, God can’t force you to believe. That would take away our ability to choose to love Him, which is the greatest choice we can make.

  21. Our universe is made for our planet. Obviously the sun keeps our planet from freezing, yet were not too close so we don’t all get incinerated. The orbit of the other planets assist earths orbit so we don’t get ‘off track’ and jupiter’s (the BIG one) immense gravity pulls in comets and meteors which would otherwise hit earth and do serious damage. If we go back to Adam and Eve, the reason our planet has natural disasters is because the earth was polluted or infected by the sin of man. Also, some natural disasters fulfill a purpose for the earth to function (tropical storms distribute heat, hurricanes support costal life).

  22. See Q#5

  23. God gave us free will so we could choose to love Him and one another. Without free will we would just be like robots. When you pre-record your phone to say “I love you” it doesn’t quite feel the same as your wife/girlfriend/parent/whoever say it. True love is a choice.

I hope this helped you. Some good sites to visit which can answer your questions better then I can are: gotquestions.org, carm.org, godandscience.org. I would love to talk to you or anyone about this further. I will pray for you. God wants you to have a relationship with Him, so if you sincerely look for Him you will find Him and He will accept you with open arms.

You find what you seek. If I was looking for rocks i wouldn’t go to a ballon factory. So if you’re looking for God, seek Him. God is Love (John 4:8). Are you seeking love?

Just so you know, Weston posted this thread 5 years ago and has since been banned, so it’s not likely he’ll see your post to him.

He’s been banned for years and hasn’t even visited since 2011.

God as typically described is evil, not “righteous”. Nor does the concept of a third party “paying it off” make sense.

No, plenty of Christians have admitted tot he reality of evolution. And any Christians who believe that humans are 6-10,000 years old are just wrong. This isn’t a matter of opinion; they are wrong.

A claim which is wrong - there was no such place or people - and again, just makes God out to be evil.

Because he was just another religious fraud or lunatic. There were no miracles; there never are.

God the megalomaniac. He exists so that others can grovel to him.

And it’s interesting how your god’s love looks exactly like hate.

And I’m too hungry for dinner to do the rest.

As a non-believer I agree with the philosophical and practical rejection of organized religion.

But, I would ask you, what will society replace it with?

Certainly, we as weak feeble humans must worship something.

There are worse idols than a 2,000-year-old pacifist from the Middle East who may or may not have existed.

I reject both of these points. I feel that worship is both unnecessary and potentially harmful, and that Jesus’s teachings are a bit too cult-like. Matt Dillahunty has some great words about the Sermon on the Mount:

Just out of curiosity… Do you accept that the current preponderance of evidence outside of religious texts points unambiguously to an earth which is closer to 4.5 billion years old, with humankind having evolved from more ape-like common ancestors several hundred thousand years ago?

This is a nice little excuse, but it still runs into the same obvious problem: did god craft the rules by which he operates? And if so, can he change them? If he can’t change them, he’s not omnipotent. And the rules as they currently stand are blatantly cruel and unusual. “Sin” is a concept that god could easily get rid of. But he didn’t.

And this makes zero sense. Most people looking to rationally look at a claim will look, first and foremost, at what evidence there is behind the claim. And you’re saying that this doesn’t apply to god? That people, when presented with slam-dunk evidence of god’s existence, will eventually lapse in their faith anyways? And your evidence for this is… The bible. Of course.

:smack:

That’s a list of sites full of at best weird logic and at worst egregious misinformation. If you’re getting any information on scientific topics from there, I have some bad news.

And yet in virtually every other point here, you’re using logic and reason to explain his ways.

I always find it curious how people of this ilk want to have it both ways. They want to be able to explain “God” using logic and reason, but when that begins to fall apart they just say that “God is beyond our human understanding.” You can’t have it both ways.
