3/30 Big Bang Theory: The Dead Hooker Juxtaposition

A pretty young thing moves into the apartment building…apparently causing Penny some angst.

See you at 8:30p(ish!)

I liked it, the CSI hooker had a point, she may care about them but Penny uses those guys too.

I liked it, but I’m kinda new to this show.

By the time I catch on to something popular, it’s usually on the way out. It can be frustrating. I wonder if NPR feels this way.

She does, but I loved when Penny broke out with the Star Trek reference and then realized…“Omg! Where did THAT come from?” I think The Four are turning her into an honorary Geek!

Sheldon was a hoot. “No, I’m just talking about bees. They’re on the Discovery Channel. See? What are you talking about?”

I thought it was a good ep.

The best part was the Vanity Card at the end, explaining that they got Penny’s joke from George Smoot, and that they all laughed to be courteous to a genius. http://www.chucklorre.com/index.php?p=247

That was one of the best lines ever (and the delivery was perfect with the pause and self aware look prior) on this show. Maybe even better since it didn’t need to feed off of Sheldon.

Funny show. Maybe this has been previously observed, but the Penny character seems very similar to Rachel on Friends - in voice, comic timing, general intelligence – I could go on. Anyone else see this?

This was one of the funniest episodes of the season. I laughed out loud several times.

The actress who plays Penny has some serious comedy chops. That look she gave herself when she used the Star Trek analogy was hilarious.

And this show had just the right amount of Sheldon in it. Too much, and he gets a bit tedious.

Yeah, there’s some correspondence.

Myself, I sort of identified more with Penny’s side of things. It’s been a fairly long time since she asked for favors out of any of the guys that go beyond reasonable requests for a friend, and she’s paid a few back recently. It was cute to see her getting protective of the gang.

And then there was also the undercurrent of Penny getting frustrated that another ‘hot new girl’ had shown up and was getting all the attention.

Poor Penny.

She finally was able to relax enough to dress comfortably around her apartment, since she realized that the guys didn’t care how she dressed. Then a rival moved into the territory and activated all the defense mechanisms she had abandoned.

Whoa, Penny in the cocktail dress. Far hotter than the new girl.

Best line: So I could defeat them both with a #2 pencil?

There was one that I thought was delivered even better, when Sheldon showed her his Admiral Akbar impression. She stared at him for a moment, and then simply turned and headed down the stairs with no reply. I thought the timing and the facial expression were impeccable.

An aside: is there a term for the process by which a moderately funny line or scenario becomes funnier through excessive repetition? I’m thinking of Sheldon’s Akbar impression - once with Penny was funny, but we heard it two or three more times through the closed door. By the last one I was sort of anticipating it, and it did indeed make me laugh harder than perhaps I should have. It’s a technique that can be over-used, but I thought it was done well in this episode.

I’ve never, ever done this before, but…

^THIS!

My faves have already been noted.
#1 was the #2 pencil.
#2, I couldn’t believe that I instantly knew who Admiral Akbar was, even before “It’s a trap!” When my wife asked me who he was, it took me about 10 words before she realized as well. “Now I can see the giant squid head!”
#3 - yeah, Penny was working that little blue dress!
#4 - the reference to raising your shields is exactly the type of thing that has been said around our dinner table so many times. So funny to see it on TV.

Oh, one other thought. When Penny was making a big attempt to win the guys back and suggested that they all watch Battlestar, I was expecting somebody to come back with, “But Battlestar Galactica is over now - didn’t you know that?”

Was Sheldon’s Admiral Akbar* impersonation any good?
*Muslim squid faced general is too weird to contemplate.

I was very disappointed, It sounded like the actor had never seen Return of the Jedi :frowning:

Yes. good episode last night. I think we can all forget the “train episode” with this one.

Multiple categories of comments for you:

I loved the opening act:

Sheldon is all “This is terible!” at the tennants above him are leaving.

Then the conversation changes topics multiple times.

“Ah, So there is a number!”

and after that

Then Penny gets to say “This is terrible!” Loved that.

“What the hell am I doing?!” My mom called the line verbatim.

“What are the odds of that?” and “I just now got that Physicist Joke!”

But, I think Penny always was a geek.

She kicks ass in Halo.
She looses time in a WOW like game : “I don’t work on Monday!” “It’s Thrusdsay.”
**I think, just maybe, Sheldon and Penny might get a date going on. **

It will be a few episodes, but I see things lineing up for it. (They are spending a lot of time together.)

I loved the Ackbar quote. I had JUST looked this up on Youtube a few days back, because it is a meme on another website I visit. When I saw Sheldon was about to do an Impression, I was like, It’s going to be “It’s a Trap!”.

Callbacks:

Penny asking Leonard and Sheldon to get her TV.

There was another Callback that went straight back to the pilot, or second episode. It escapes me now.

I guess we can comfirm that the Train Episode had Smoot on it now.

Did I see a Penny blossom in Penny’s hair last night?

Anyone remember anymore? There seemed to be quite a few.
Also, I think it was the Atlanta GA Feed of the show, but our audio cut out twice as we were watching it:

After “A fancy restaurant, like Olive Garden”:

  1. Why did howard stay with his mom? Audio Did Sheldon make a comment about his back support?

At the end of the show:
2. What was the gist of the bit right before the end? We heard perhaps the last two lines before the card.

The duo made some comment before, about having Season 1 on DVD, and watching it, AGAIN, with subtitiles.

Sci Fi is also owned by NBC, right?

CSI on the otherhand, comes on 2 hours after Big Bang, on CBS.

If CBS could pick one show over the other to pitch…

Well, we see which one they picked.
