My thought is that if the video corroborated the incident KFC might have taken a different approach; basically just fire the employee and maybe a manager involved and probably they still would have given some money to the girl. If it is inconclusive, that would be very counterproductive for KFC. I think they are trying to put the incident and blame for the incident behind and redirect the focus to helping the girl and their part in being generous and charitable.
You don’t fire an employee because a customer is having a meltdown. You also don’t pay out to obvious scams like the finger scam. Both of those things are an invitation for customers to behave badly.
You might think that paying for the injured girl’s hospital bill is similar, but it’s mostly a chance to piggyback a bad story, that’s proven to be circulating well, with a positive message about KFC. It’s adding a positive to a negative.
Internally, they may have addressed what they might do if a similar incident happens in the future. Since they’ve already paid off once, they may be able to successfully accuse any copycats of trying to scam them.
Interesting. Thanks for making the distinction about “severe” bites. I volunteer at my local animal shelter have have been witness to several dog bites and have been bit myself. All were stitched.
That $30K won’t make a drop in the bucket regarding her bills. She had been in the hospital since the attack occurred in April.
Perhaps $30k is the family’s portion of the medical bills (e.g. their copay).
The attack occurred in April, the supposed KFC incident happened in June. What “three day old wounds” are you talking about?
Why is the percentage of the medical bills in re the 30K being discussed in this thread? Did KFC promise to pay all of her bills, or something?
I was wondering where the number came from.
This is very encouraging news. Dr Stile has already flown to see the little girl and found a prosthesis business to donate an eye. I guess surgery will happen later this year? It should make starting school much easier for the girl. Hopefully much of the obvious scarring can be eliminated and she can have a normal childhood and life.
I’m impressed that the doctor acted so quickly. Even flying across country for a house call.

Looks like it was a hoax.
The link isn’t working.
Thank you.
Well, there it is then.
I mentioned earlier that if the story was true, it’s despicable. That it’s a hoax and the family is using the little girl this way is despicable.
And KFC handled it just about perfectly.
They come out looking supportive and kind. If they had a damn brain in their collective corporate skull they’d say it was an unfortunate incident but they’re happy to help the girl and they just want to drop the whole thing. Stop while you’re ahead KFC.
I agree. Don’t punish a 3 year old kid. I hope the charitable plastic surgeon will still do the right thing and fix her scars. She still needs the glass eye from that other generous donor. Withdrawing help now just harms the kid.
Here’s another scenario, where grandma doesn’t even need to be acting jerkish:
People see grandma with badly-injured child.
Someone engages her in conversation, but the tone pisses off grandma because the person seems to be implying negligence or even abuse on her part.
It all kicks off, and grandma is asked to leave, but not the other party. She’s fuming (perhaps legitimately) but knows this version of events won’t interest anyone, so makes the situation a little more black-and-white in her write up.
Not to claim that this is what happened of course. And maybe KFC will admit that the story is true, or other people will come forward to support that version of events. In the meantime I can’t get pissed about it while it seems so implausible compared to other ways this could have played out.
Or they were never there in the first place. According to the source, which spoke on condition of anonymity:
And the owner of the two KFC franchises in Jackson posted on Facebook:
Well isn’t this nice:
I suppose we shouldn’t all hold our breath waiting for these assholes to come back and apologize for their assaults and rudeness.
