30 Day Song Challenge, number 24: a song that you want to play at your funeral

Buck Owens - Buckaroo

Preferably while they’re moving me out. It just sounds like a song to play when you’re going somewhere.

I am pretty sure my wife knows I want this one:

Current 93: The Blue Gates of Death

I have a playlist I want my survivor to burn to thumb drives or whatever the technology will be, and give out as funeral favors, so I can’t pick just one. Some of them:

The Stories We Could Tell - Tom Petty
Dance Into The Light - Phil Collins
To Live Is To Fly - Cowboy Junkies version
The Wings That Fly Us Home - John Denver
Blow Gabriel Blow - Jonathan Price and cast of De-Lovely movie
Gulf Coast Highway - Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris
When They Ring Those Golden Bells - Emmylou Harris
Going Home (Theme from Local Hero) - Mark Knopfler

I guess Gulf Coast Highway is the most poignant since I listened to it a lot after my Mom died.

And when she dies she says she’ll catch some blackbird’s wing
and she will fly away to heaven on some sweet blue bonnet spring

I got sidetracked by my brilliant playlist idea. The songs that will actually be played at my funeral are

Love Divine, All Loves Excelling
What Wondrous Love Is This*
How Can I Keep From Singing?
Sing With All The Saints In Glory
*And when from death I’m free
I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on
And when from death I’m free I’ll sing on
And when from death I’m free
I’ll sing and joyful be
And through eternity
I’ll sing on

I’d have a hard time choosing between these three Monty Python songs;

Galaxy song
Galaxy song sung by professor Stephen Hawking
Always look on the bright side of life

Mainly for their honest gag lines of
"Pray that there’s intelligent life somewhere out in space, 'cause there’s bugger all down here on earth "

“Life’s a piece of shit when you look at it, life’s a laugh and death’s a joke, it’s true, you’ll see it’s all a show, keep 'em laughing as you go, just remember that the last laugh is on you”

I mean, what have you got to lose?
You know, you come from nothing
You’re going back to nothing
What have you lost? Nothing!

“Untitled” by R.E.M. (Track 11 on Green.)

For my funeral, I want “JETZT IST ES STILL”, by E Nomine

*Dann nichts mehr…völlige ruhe
Von Überlebenden keine Spur
Ich schließe die Augen obwohl ich nicht will;
dann schlaf auch ich ein
und jetzt ist es still…

Nunc est silentium
Fatum terminatus est
Transit humanitas
Tacet rota temporis*

Styx I’m Sailing Away

Guess I’m showing my age, but Blood, Sweat and Tears “And When I Die” was my choice from when I first heard it and haven’t changed my mind in the last 48+ years.

"Just bundle up my coffin, cause it's cold way down there."

In college, I always said I wanted Talking Heads’ “Heaven” played at my funeral. Nowadays, I think I’d prefer Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart For A While”.

I came here specifically to mention that Zevon song. In fact, I did have it played at my dad’s funeral.

“The '59 Sound” by The Gaslight Anthem.

That’s on my playlist too!

I don’t want a formal funeral, but if a few friends get together after my death, I’d like them to listen to Mike Batt’s Bright Eyes and remember me.
