30 Rock 11/16

Does anyone remember how Twofer got his name?

Having seen all of Alec Baldwin’s 13 hosting gigs on Saturday Night Live, I expected him to be brilliant, and he is. In my opinion, Baldwin is the best host SNL has ever had. He’s usually the funniest person on the show, in a show full of comedy professionals.

A perfect example of how good he is with comedy is the scene last week where he calls Lemon in at 3 AM to help him with his lines. After she storms off, he called out, “…Lemon?..Lemon?..Lemon?” And then there’s a longer pause, and a final plaintive “Lemon?..”

It’s the last “Lemon” that was funny. The humor there was all about timing, and he timed it perfectly. Baldwin ‘gets’ the nuance of comedy timing, which is a rare thing. Steve Carrel is another master of timing.

I really like the show. It’s got an earnestness about it I like, too. And I really like all the little General Electric in-jokes. I like a network that’s willing to poke fun at itself.

Then there’s the cleverness. Did you notice that in the last episode, the writers are told that they have to integrate GE products into the comedy, and that the product they have to integrate is some obscure power generator for industry or something. You’re thinking, “How the hell can they tie that into a comedy show?” Which of course is the gag. Then you realize they just did. It’s a real product, and it’s been integrated into this show in a funny way. I like that sort of stuff.

And I liked how Jane Krakowski’s character only found it icky to seduce an old guy because he wasn’t a powerful executive who could help her career.

They moved 30 Rock to Thursday? Fuckers! I work Thursday nights and can only record one show at once. I was liking this show too…

He’s black and he went to Harvard.

Life imitates art. Her role got downsized (she’ll show up in different bit parts throughout the season) by network execs and Krakowski was brought in as the show-within-a-show’s star. My guess? Not sexy enough. Sigh.
