30 years of HBO Boxing

My husband and I are watching the Vargas vs. Vanderpool fight on HBO. Shortly before the fight began they mentioned HBO’s 30th anniversary of boxing.

My husband was baffled, he was born in 72, he could not believe that HBO had been around since 1973.

I was born in 71, but I argued that HBO wouldn’t lie about something like that.

An important fact: we both lived in NYC (or in his case, the suburbs of) and shockingly HBO was not available to my family or his until the mid 80’s.

He still didn’t believe it so I checked the HBO website and they state the following

Did anyone here have HBO in 1973 or shortly thereafter so that I can prove to my husband that HBO would not state something that is untrue? Please help me help him see the light.

In January 1973 they broadcast Frazier/Foreman from Jamaica. Here is some early history. They started in November 1972.

Moving this to Cafe Society.

Holy Walnuts, I’m sorry Czarcasm. I thought I was in the cafe at posting time :smack:

I remember seeing movies on HBO around 1978.

Of course, in those days it would be only a few movies that were endlessly repeated, unlike now.

First saw HBO in 1980. Only ‘broadcast’ in the weekday evenings. (more on weekends). Was that true nationwide?

Our cable was 5 channels + HBO. Big 3, PBS, and a Spanish channel.

Forget the 30-year question – did you see Lampley’s hair of eight years ago?

We had HBO in 1972. “Love Will Keep Us Together” was the #1 Hit and I was in the 7th grade. Back then they had what they called “Encore Hits” and would run old movies over again for you.
(Like Jaws, The Exorcist and A Star Is Born)

Memory plays tricks. It was #1 in 1975, and those movies were released in 1975, 1973 and 1976 respectively.

I think Ali-Foreman was televised on HBO. That was 1974. TV Guide did an issue of the "100 Greatest Televised Sporting Events, " and this one was included.

A subsequent letter expressed incredulity at the inclusion because so insignificantly few people had HBO in 1974.

Strangely according to The Cable Centre

Although

OK. Looks like “The Thrilla in Manila” instead of “The Rumble in the Jungle.”
