Today marked the 30th anniversary of the eruption of Mount St Helens. It brought back memories for me because I lived in Vancouver at the time. I woke up with the smell of sulpher in the air and was leaving my apt., I thought it was a gas leak. Looked out the big windows as I was heading down the stairs and saw the black plume coming from the mountain. It was awe inspiring in it’s way seeing flashes of lightning in the cloud, and the cloud rising higher and higher. Then going back to my apt. and watching it on the news. Does any one else have stories like this?
Wait, wait. You can see Mt St Helens from Vancouver? I had no idea it was so close to the Canadian border.
Or are you talking about Vancouver, WA?
(I was in high school in Ontario when it blew. First time I recall hearing about an active volcano on the North American mainland. Cool and scary. Volcanoes were supposed to be only in distant, exotic places like Italy, Hawai’i and Iceland
Mt. St. Helens is 50 miles north of Vancouver WA. I remember the eruption and seeing it on the news, even though I was four at the time. I mean come on! it’s mountains and blowing stuff up, boys favorites! There’s even a neato volcano cam!
Sorry, I should have said Washington. Since I now live in Portland, OR I still get to see Mount St Helens, and it’s still a lovely view, especially when it smokes.
