32 Years Later, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka Charged With Murder of GF

Still, I wouldn’t bet the farm on that.
However, that Daily News link — and both links confirm my low opinion of journalists — has, for today, just today’s headlines, a fascinating spectrum of life as it is lived now, in the sidebar.

Happy The Land That Has No History.

The WWE is certainly a household name around the world. Not sure why that’s relevant, though.

Still, why charge him now, after all these years? Why not at the time or in the decades since? What’s changed?

Even notwithstanding his cancer, I’ve read that Snuka may be suffering from dementia. There’s certainly an argument to be made that there’s no point in imprisoning a person if they are no longer mentally capable of understanding why they’re being imprisoned.

I think you over-estimate the appeal of wrestling, and more particularly of foreign wrestling; I have never seen a wrestling match, even on TV ( I don’t think it’s on British TV any more ), but if I did I wouldn’t watch the estimable Mr. McMahon’s mob.
Just explaining why few people here, let alone in Mongolia or Ukraine, have heard of Mr. Snuka or his unfortunate incident so very long ago.

BTW the 75-yr-old chap in Queens who hung himself in a kids’ playground from a pull-up bar is by no means the 57-yr-old chap who hung himself in Queens the same day. * He* used a parkway exit sign.

You might not, but other people do. WWE has been and remains on Sky for years and is the second-highest drawing programming after Premiership football.

Surprised that a certain poster hasn’t yet popped up to call the victim a gold-digging slut. Give him time…

There was a recent expose in the local papers about the story. Good way for a prosecutor to make a name for himself. And at no risk if Snuka can’t stand trial.

Doesn’t even include wrestling.

You assume they count wrestling as a sport.

WWE doesn’t consider themselves a sport. And for whatever it’s worth, I have watched WWE on TV in Europe.

If he’s competent, which the court has Legal standards to decide, he should stand trial.

The expose also did reveal new evidence, hence the grand jury investigation.

I answered the accusation about the prosecutor earlier. He’s an older guy who has been DA for almost 20 years. Not exactly an up and comer looking for higher office.

Stories like this remind me of the case of Gerald Mason, an ex-con who came upon two teenaged couples in a California lovers’ lane in 1957, bound and blindfolded them at gunpoint, raped one of the girls and escaped in their car. He ran a red light and was pulled over by two police officers, both of whom he fatally shot.

"For the next 45 years, Mason was a law-abiding citizen, never getting so much as a parking ticket. He owned two service stations, had married and raised a family. He was later described by friends and neighbors as friendly and helpful…’

He was tracked down finally and arrested.

*"Police located Mason, who had returned to and was still living in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina. He was a wealthy retiree and a grandfather, quietly living with his family in a suburban neighborhood. Then, in January 2003, a large group of police officers called at his door. Mason was completely shocked and had asked where they were from. The police officers had said, “We are from the El Segundo Police Department,” and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Mason then said, “You’re homicide detectives? I think I need a lawyer.” The police officers then told him that they were there because of the murder of two police officers in 1957. Horrified, Mason responded, “You’re here for that?”

Following his arrest, Mason was further identified by the bullet graze wound scar on his back, from a bullet fired by Officer Phillips in 1957."…

"Mason pled guilty and was sentenced to two consecutive life terms. At his sentencing hearing, Mason tearfully apologized to the families of Officers Phillips and Curtis. He said, “It’s impossible to express to so many people how sorry I am. I do not understand why I did this. It does not fit in my life. It is not the person I know. I detest these crimes.”[1]

One El Segundo Detective commented, “He was remorseful. But I think he was more sad and more sorry for having been caught.”*

His parole was denied in 2009. As to why authorities are “persecuting” this law-abiding old man, maybe his victims and/or their families might have perspective on that.
