Calling CGI “3D animation” isn’t that uncommon, but the rise of stereoscopic 3D stuff’s mostly killed it. I vaguely recall early CGI flicks like Toy Story using “3D” in their marketing, but I could be wrong.

And it is not a clear distinction - ever since Disney’s The Great Mouse Detective 3D tools have been used to produce complex perspectives in otherwise traditional 2D films - including, yes, The Iron Giant. The lead character was a animated in a 3D animation program.
