I felt a Mundane Pointless need to share this week’s produce specials here at my local Los Angeles markets, after my thread in IMHO wherein everyone expressed surprise and some envy that produce can be so cheap in California.
So I guess I needed to feel like I had a tiny bit of something special that lots of other people don’t have today.
Holy shit. If I could get an avocado for .39 or .50 I’d eat four a day. I still kind of do, but I would then, too, and they’d be $.39 each. You’re right, though, mangoes are occasionally on sale for a buck each here, too (Philadelphia).
And it’s good stuff? Like that’s fresh romaine, locally grown by reasonable people?
The use of the word “reasonable” has thrown me a bit…but yes, it’s local produce and very fresh. It’s not always the best in terms of being the ripest, or the best genetic varieties, but it’s very fresh and very edible.
My local, privately-owned, grocery store is currently selling over-waxed, past their prime cucumbers for $1.49 EACH! This prompts me to grab my current local grocery add, for the least expensive store within reasonable distance from my home/work.
Oranges: 10 for $10. yes, a buck a piece
Cantaloupe: $3.99 each (but currently buy one-get one free)
Mangoes: 4/$5
Tomatoes: $2.99/lb (best price other than walmart)
Asparagus: $2.99/lb
Lemons or limes: 3 for $2
Strawberries: $2.50/pint
My favorite ice cream brand? $2.50 for a 48 oz container, full fat.
Apple juice? $3.99/60 oz…Pepsi is $4 for 3 2-liter bottles
Bananas: $.25 lb.
Mexican Papaya: 4lbs/1
Chicken drumsticks: .49 lb.! I don’t eat meat but I will buy these to make wet cat food. I buy them quality (no corn, wheat, byproducts, etc.) dry food but have found its much, much cheaper to make the wet food and freeze it ahead. I use chicken drumsticks, brown rice, carrots and peas.
