40 years ago.....

Who remembers this?
I was handling a garment a few minutes ago and I started humming this song…never been in a union. never worked in the garment industry, but I remembered this commercial.
I looked this up and found it rather compelling, especially the one from 78…

Look for the Union Label 1978 ILGWU ad - YouTube

Oh yeah, I remember that one.

Damn, now I’m humming it.

Yeah, I remember. And thanks a lot for the earworm.

Thanks for the heads up, I turned the sound off before I watched.

No, never seen those commercial before …

I only know it because it was used on an episode of South Park.
It’s got to be very late 70s or early 80s before I would have any real T.V. memories.

A Saturday Night Live parody.

Forty years ago today, plus a few hours, Wife had her first probable heart attack. “You should have woken me!”

“I couldn’t move. I meditated it away.”

Denial, etc. Start of a trend.

What does this have to do with the thread topic?

Maybe his wife was in a union at the time.

I sure do remember that commercial, because my grandmother was a member of the ILGWU. She put in 25years in a dress factory way BITD, doing piece work, right here in downtown Philadelphia. Yes children, we actually used to make things right here in the USA. I remember seeing the sewn-in labels of the dresses she bought at her factory, some of which she had help to make. The union was a godsend for its members, and the pensions, while small by today’s standards, were enough to put retirees on a better footing. Every month when her pension check came in the mail, she’d actually kiss it, and smile. Remembering all this makes me smile too.

Nothing. The title got me thinking about July 5, 1976. And before you deny the obvious, yes, everything is about me.

July 5, 1976, was my first wedding anniversary. Now it’s nothing.

I didn’t even need to click on the link to know exactly what the OP was talking about.

^^With or without a mouseover? If without, then that’s probably an act of psychic reading worthy of Uri Geller.

I suspected it was that tune. Without a mouseover. “Garment Industry” is the giveaway.

In college my roommates and I parodied that tune relentlessly with random obscene lyrics. And now we are all physicians, saving lives.

Yes, I remember. It was a catchy tune.

40 years ago today my mother was less than 3 weeks pregnant with me, and my memories of commercials from when I was still a largely undifferentiated ball of cells is a bit fuzzy.

Yep, me too. And being as I have a head full of jingles that I heard as a kid (8.O.O… 3.2.5…3.5.3.5.) I still remember the words.

I guess those ILGWU commercials didn’t have much of an impact on Americans’ buying habits, did they?

I remember those as well. Very catchy song. The ILGU was finally dissolved in 1995. I’m surprised it lasted that long.

Eh. . . without a mouseover. . . and just the title of the OP “40 years ago. . .” you deduced it was the ILGWU jingle? “a-MAY-zing, Holmes!”
