I hope the Montreal looters were able to put their hands on some ventilators. They might just need them in a week or two.
No looting or rioting in Maine. I was at a protest last night near my house … I won’t bother wasting another dozen electrons, I’ll just link to what I posted elsewhere …
(double post)
I went out to pick up dinner from the drive-thru at Culvers just now. As I was driving back home, I saw that the town where I live has set a barricade (one of these, but with only one of the two legs attached) up on the parkway, next to where each side street intersects with the main street.
Those weren’t there as of this morning, but clearly the town has decided that, if things get stupid again tonight, they’re going to block off access into the neighborhoods from the main street (undoubtedly with a village truck behind each barricade).
As I noted upthread, I’m in a pretty quiet suburb; OTOH, we did have that looting a couple of miles away yesterday.
Mostly peaceful protest marches on the Northside of Chicago tonight in various neighborhoods. A very beautiful day and still a lot of sun at this point. I live north along the lakefront and there is very little traffic at this point. Occasional sirens can be heard.
The restaurant company I work for decided to shut down two locations tonight as a precaution. The one near Wrigley Field has been boarded up. The one I operate was shutdown and locked up. I got the call while I was having a meeting with the staff we were bringing back to work since outdoor dining is supposed to start up on Wednesday. A lot of bummed out people but everyone pitched in to make sure we had everything secured. Hopefully we can get this done by the weekend.
I live a five minute walk away so I can go over and check on things if needed. We will see what happens I guess.
Actually, I learned this morning that a couple of cell phone stores a bit east of us were looted. I saw video of one of the incidents on a neighborhood Facebook page. Looked like a fairly well-organized group of a dozen or so guys who parked in a nearby bank lot, took tools out of the trunks of their cars to smash in the windows, and were in and out in a minute or two. Happened late at night and had nothing to do with any protesting.
I live in North Alabama, and while there have been protests, it’s been relatively peaceful until this evening: George Floyd protest in Huntsville ends in police firing tear gas as crowd refused to disperse - al.com
Still no reports of fires/looting, I think the authorities here are doing their best to allow the protesters space but not allowing things to get bad. But with the Tear Gas deployment, we’ll see.
And 90 miles south of Birmingham, the destruction was more on point: Alabama protesters tried to remove a Confederate monument but the mayor told them he would finish the job | CNN
Just reported on CNN. Lafayette Park, where the DC protests have been taking place, is being surrounded by an 8 ft fence.
Muskegon, Michigan - and I keep hearing what sounds like fireworks??
More demonstration in Murfreesboro.
Peaceful, but tense.
The resort town of Breckenridge Colorado had a march down main street yesterday. Didn’t see it my self but from videos it appeared to be mostly/all white folks dressed in black. A few hundred of them, and it was peaceful. Note, this town and the entire county has a very small black population. Probably more Hispanic I think, but 80% upper middle class white folks.
I have to go into town today, I wonder if they are doing it again.
The protests have been completely peaceful by me.
A group of people tried to storm Westforth Sports yesterday. Which is a gun store. That’s the only “sporting equipment” they sell, guns, ammunition, and accessories for same.
Fortunately, the sheriff department put a stop to that before they got inside… because that would not have ended well for those forcing entry. Possibly not for anyone.
My little town has it’s demonstration/protest planned for this coming Sunday. Business owners are making plans to defend their property.
Still hoping my street stays calm.
Sheese. That would have been quite the standoff.
The second night of protests in Lincoln, Nebraska went much better than the first. The mayor came out to talk to the protesters, who were out after curfew:
Still a few rabble-rousers out there who lingered after everyone else went home, but still a step in the right direction.
Raleigh was calm last night ,a few people arrested for staying out past 8 PM curfew
Interesting video from a fellow Maine Twitterer:
Um… not exactly.
I’ve been in Westforth Sports. The firepower available to the staff is jaw-dropping, really.
The result would be noisy, but brief.
Yesterday, in contrast to the day before, was relatively quiet in my neighborhood, although the Western Suburbs (Naperville) and a number of other places got hit. I hopped on the neighborhood watch last night, so I stayed out beyond curfew, until 1:20 a.m., and didn’t see much of anything out there. There were reports of shots fired on the scanner at a couple of locations, but I didn’t see anything when I got to the addresses. I did see a Dollar Tree getting looted yesterday at about 5 p.m., but when you’re looting the Dollar Tree, all the good places must be picked over. I almost wanted to pull over and say, hey, here’s fifty bucks, buy yourself something nice.
Today the weather has warmed up significantly (high 80s/low 90s from the 60s/low 70s of the past few days), so let’s see if that affects anything. Warm weather usually means higher crime here. But there’s only so many stores to loot, and the main ones have been looted. Meanwhile, there are agitators on social media fomenting tension between the African-American and Latinx communities, so, hey, that’s fun! What a year 2020 has been. Can we take a mulligan and just start it over?
