The thing I love about these sorts of threads is the glimpses into the board’s past that they give us through the linked posts. It took me about two hours to read through this entire thread tonight. That’s about fifteen minutes of reading lists of names, and an hour and forty five of perusing the history of the SDMB.
How do I manage to make these lists? I’m an opinionated, surly, obnoxious little (well, okay, not little) bastard. I don’t compare with any of the people on your list, if you ask me.
The #5 bin was primarily reserved for the “Fighting Tooth and Nail” group. No matter what the position was, these guys usually had a firm stranglehold on the debate/topic at hand. That is admirable.
This is not in order of importance. It’s like a five-way tie for first place.
Eve–an OP by her is often especially compelling, e.g. the recent Pope thread. Polycarp–for whom I have nothing but admiration. Aesiron–one of the first Dopers I really noticed. Cartooniverse–love the name, and a great guy, from all I’ve read. Siege–intelligent and well-spoken lady.
Honorable mentions to Anaamika (of whom I am dangerously fond), Roland Orzabal (smart, rambling guy who likes…was it a band? ), and jjimm (whose “I stuck my wedding ring up my nose” thread, when I was reading Threadspotting one day before I joined, convinced me that I might find a home among the Dopers.)
I’m surprised I appeared in one list, let alone three. Usually I kill a thread as soon as I post to it, and I seem to be a lot of Ignore lists. My posting rate has dropped to about 1/day due to many factors, and I spend more time trying to do Staff Reports than posting. It’s self-centered vanity entirely, but it’s pleasantly surprising to stumble on a thread like this and see someone say they think something I type is worth reading.
Given my recent join date, and the areas of the playground I tend to gravitate to, the first 5 to come to mind were:

[li]The prolific Guinastasia[/li][li]The oft-lauded Polycarp[/li][li]Fellow Tolkien freak Qadgop the Mercotan[/li][li]The outspoken Diogenes the Cynic[/li][li]And Bosda Di’chi of Tricor because every time I see that handle I can’t help trying to parse its pronunciation[/li][/ul]
