50 book challenge

I’ve seen in the SDMB Livejournal the 50 book challenge going on. It seems like a great idea, but I’m not very familiar with Livejournal or the Challenge itself, and I would like to know more about how to participate. Do I need to have a Livejournal to participate (i.e. to post over there)? Does any of the 50 book challenge take place on these boards or is it restricted to LJ? What are the rules of the challenge itself? Is there a page or a thread somewhere explaining all this that I have missed?

jadis_eoc created the 50BookChallenge LiveJournal community, so she may be able to clarify/add on to this, but here’s my understanding:

Yes, you would need a LiveJournal account to post to the community - How To Get Started NOTE: LJ codes are no longer needed to create an account.

I think there was a thread posted here the beginning of 2003 (when the challenge started) - but don’t know if it will be resurrected or a new one will start. (Hmmm - how about this thread? )

The rules are what you make of them. The basic intent of the community is to read 50 books. Many people are interpreting that to mean new-to-them books, others are allowing themselves to re-read. Some people count graphic novels & kids’ books, others do not. Some people simply post the list of what they’ve read so far, others post a quick rating, while still others weigh in with lengthy reviews.

I’ve enjoyed stretching my literary boundaries by reading books I probably would not have picked up on my own.
