52% Of All Americans Have One Of These In Their Car

It’s not like people only take ice scrapers out to their cars when they’re needed. When you live in Snow World, you pretty much keep one on the back seat all the time. It’s of little use in your home when you’re stuck at work with icy windows. In fact, most people I know cart around their ice scrapers in the middle of a heat wave in July. Too much work to do anything else with it.

My guess for the 52% was open containers.

[Checking location…S. Carolina, that explains it]

Up here in the northern states, pretty much everyone has an ice scraper in their car all the time. Scraping ice is not an occasional inconvenience, it’s a daily ritual. Most people have the scraper rolling around in the backseat even during the summer. It’s as much a part of the car as the floor mats.

we just got our car a little bit ago and we haven’t eaten in it yet, otherwise we would fall into that 52% as well. Little hands drop french fries quite a bit and it’s hard to find them under the seat.

An orgasm.

A child.

Are we there yet?

I dont even own and ice scraper.

What do you drive??

In north, ice scraper owns you.

Didn’t Fargo make a point of showing William H Macy’s character having to scrape ice off his car?

Yes, but I think the point of that was to underscore his frustration, not to peg him into a 52% demographic.

I didn’t even know an ice scraper existed and still don’t know what one looks like.

Pshaw. 'Round here a little ice never closed anything.

Here’s a typical ice scraper. I got one when I moved to North Carolina. It’s still in my car, even though I moved back to coastal Southern California. Ya never know when you might need one.

Well, this California resident not only used his ice scraper this morning but also had to force open a frozen-shut car door.

Around here, the days per year when an ice scraper is necessary (in the early morning, anyway) probably add up to a month, more or less…but that thing sits in there with the maps year round 'cuz that’s where he lives…

To those of you who have never heard of an ice scraper before…

I’m jealous. We have two.

That’s typical of one of two types. The other type has a longer handle and looks like a big red toothbrush.

In north, ice scraper SCRAPES you.

You’re not really familiar with the concept of frost, are you? It’s what happens to dew when it’s cold enough outside to freeze water. You have to scrape it off the windshield in order to see.

You should just move down here with the buttloads of other Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Ontario expats who have mostly forgotten what an ice scraper is. 50% of my co-workers are from Michigan. The other 50% are sane.

When I moved from Berkeley to Ohio, an ice scraper was one of the Welcome Wagon gifts. Shoulda known…

I’m back in CA now. (I grew up near Chicago, though, and spent a further five years in the Lake Erie snowbelt, so I’vd done my time.)
